No, you cannot play UMDs on the Vita. No, there is no transfer program or upgrade or trade-in or anything of the sort. Physical PSP games are trapped on the -1000, -2000 and -3000.

However, there are PSP games in the SEN store. You can purchase, download and play those on your Vita without issue. You are limited to the selection on the store (which isn't terrible) but by no means encompasses every title available.

Hard to say, but at this moment for the bang per buck, go with the PSP. I have both -2000 and -3000 models, and yes there are interlacing issues on -3000, but that is very minor, and you get a much brighter screen than -2000.

Sony has not made every PSP games available for PSN download, and this includes Crisis Core: FFVII, Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep, FF I & II, Valkyrie Profile: Lennth, and Jeanne d'Arc... several games that are listed as the best on PSP by several gaming critics.

Yet, the OLED on Vita is so good, that I actually bought PSP games on PSN one more time! But Sony seriously needs to do a price for both system and memory cards.

I got a PSP-3000 for myself late last year.

What really made me interested in PSP over Vita is the fact that it can play UMDs, which greatly expands the selection of games I'm interested in, and that it can be played on a TV (even if the quality isn't that great).
The Vita has some interesting titles and I might get one way down the line, but I'm happy with my PSP.

Plus UMD PSP games are easy to find for super-cheap. You can build up a decent game-library in no time!

Doesn't PS+ work on the Vita? What kind of free games can you get from that service?

What about homebrew?

Right now...

Uncharted, Wipeout 2048, Gravity Rush, Plants vs. Zombies, Ninja Gaiden Sigma Plus, Mega Man Maverick Hunter X ... etc.

Best deal out there.

Back when the PSP got busted wide open (including the Go and the -3000), homebrew became about equal on all models. Except for some older homebrew which only worked on 1.5 firmware -1000s, but most (if not all) of that has been superseded with better stuff. The -1000 has an IR port which the other models don't have, and some older homebrew utilizes. No big deal.

In terms of screens, the -3000 interlacing and ghosting is pretty rough. It's definitely the easiest model to get ahold of, but I'd rate the screens Go > -2000 > -3000 > -1000.

Just a friendly reminder to all plus members, start the download for every free game and then cancel it. Even if you don't have a vita or space for the game on your hard drive or memory card you can still download it in the future then, even if your sub expires and you renew. Hell I don't have a vita but if I come across a great deal I'll pick one up and be able to play the plus games.

I can't stress this enough.

Well, if this is still being considered, I say go PSP.

The Vita isn't going anywhere, and it has plenty of time to build its library (I'm not saying the current selection is bad, for the record).

The PSP though, has a big fat pile of awesome games, for cheap as you know. Collecting for the system is addicting and definitely worthwhile.

For me, the huge selection of games and low cost makes it a perfect choice, even outweighing the great deal that is ps+.

I want a Vita myself, but I'd like to see a price drop first. Until then, you seriously cannot go wrong with PSP. Fantastic little system.
