Re: Together Retro: Wing Commander
The best version is on PC. Get it from GOG or the physical CD version - they come with all the same stuff.

Re: Together Retro: Wing Commander
You should've picked Wing Commander 3 imo. It's much more impressive with all the famous real life actors and CGI that has aged quite well.
Are you implying that Populous is a bad game?

My WTB thread (Sega CD/Saturn games)
Also looking to buy: Ys III (TG-16 CD), Shadowrun (Genesis) Hori N64 mini pad and Slayer (3DO) in long box/just the long box

No, I'm implying that the SNES port of Populous left much to be desired.

Re: Together Retro: Wing Commander
I'd definitely recommend picking up the GOG.com version. The SNES version has some rough graphics, difficult controls and is overall a watered down experience.
The Sega CD version is interesting, if only because it's completely voice acted which is kind of crazy.
Unfortunately I don't think the GOG version includes the expansions which is a shame. The CD "Deluxe Edition" version does though, if you can find it. EDIT: Actually they've updated it and it the GOG version does include all expansions for Wing Commander 1 and 2. I highly recommend picking this bundle up. Well worth the $5.99.
I'm looking forward to hearing what people have to say. Wing Commander is one of my all-time favorite franchises.

Have it for the snes, as well as "Secret Missions". Will play and beat it again for funsies.
Don't forget you need permission to land people.

Re: Together Retro: Wing Commander
I also wonder how many people will beat the dreaded "Kurosawa, mission 2." One of the hardest missions of any Wing Commander game.
Apparently they put it in there to try and get people off the "winning" path so they'd be forced to experience some of the other routes of getting through the game.

On the PC, hit C for comm menu, select Tiger's Claw and select "Request Landing" and as long as you've cleared the mission requirements, just fly towards it and you're good to go.

When you are 13, don't have either an instruction booklet nor the Internet, figuring out how to land is a very, very frustrating experience.
Re: Together Retro: Wing Commander
You don't have to beat Kurosawa to get the best ending. If you fail Kurosawa and beat Rostov, you still get the best ending. You don't actually even have to win any of the Venice missions to emerge victorious. Just beat all the Rostov missions and you win.
Concerning landing, you do have to line up with the front of the Tigers Claw after radioing in. You can't land from the rear of the Claw.
I love everything about this game. The early VGA animations are awesome, the music is well done and fitting, the difficulty is just right, the story and characters are really fleshed out for their time. Each wingman has their own personality, and are actually occasionally helpful in combat. The dogfighitng is just plain fun. IMO, it was the best of its time beating anything since Star Raiders(1979).
I may take this opportunity to play it on the 3DO. I just played through it late last year on my Tandy. Would be fun to see the updated graphics.
One tip, you don't have to complete objectives in order. Sometimes you can avoid an ambush or asteroid field by visiting checkpoints out of order.

As it was for many who were playing this game years later. I threw that out there just for all those who had no idea what to do and ran right into the ship thinking "ok, we're done!"

You're telling me. They were next to useless on the SNES, but as I was playing the McAuliffe scenario today, Paladin took out the Ralari while I was busy with the Krants. Now that's dedication!
Plus, good tip on avoiding minefields. They hurt
