Re: Dragon Quest 8 Opinions?
I think the game lasted so long for me because I wanted the full metal king armor or something like that and I could never find all the pieces until recently.

Re: Dragon Quest 8 Opinions?
I had a great time with DQ8 even though my story does not have a happy ending
As a kid some of the first NES games I received from my parents were Dragon Warrior 1 and 2 and I played them to death never got 3 or 4 and didnt have a playstation or gameboy color to play the other ones growing up(a non video game phase of my life)
I didnt pick the series back up until number 8 when I had gotten motivated to lose weight and needed an RPG to play while I walked on a treadmill. I walked as much as my characters did in game and lost quite a bit of weight and then later on when I was about 100 hours into it I was on a trip and had a bag stolen with the ps2 and the memory card. Because of that I have yet to see the ending of the game and I dont know if the evil spell was broken(not a spoiler you find this out in the first ten mins)
even without ever beating it I can say with confidence that this is my favorite PS2 game and in my top ten overall
The art style is all cell shaded and super colorful, i get a bit bored with alot of the games now that dont pop out at me, i was a big fan of Jet Set Radio and Borderlands because of the cell shading.
The enemies made me laugh and alot of them were throwbacks to ones i had grown up with from the first two games. and being able to use monsters later in the monster arena was a nice treat and mini game.
The voice acting was half decent for once even though the main char is a mute. I felt bad if i skipped any of the dialog and the developers did a great job of conveying the personalities of the different characters you run into.
And this is a personal thing, but games that say that I have recived the magical herb always get my vote.
Ive gotten a new PS2 and Ive started playing through the game again on the treadmill, I hope this time I finish the journey.

You've clearly never played DQ7 if this is your opinion of DQ8.CFFJR wrote:I have to agree, sadly.ZeoDefender wrote:It made molasses look like an F-Zero racer. Dragon Quest has always been slow and clunky, but good lord this game takes it to a whole new level. Great production values, but the game itself is pretty much unplayable.
I don't think I've ever become bored with a game as quickly as I did with DQ8.
Which is a shame, as I was very excited to play it when it came out. I've considered giving it another chance one of these days, but eh...

Our human minds were not designed to comprehend the true awfulness of Dragon Quest VII. Just one hour with this game will reduce you to gibbering madness as your brain struggles to comprehend the horror that it experienced. You will throw yourself off the nearest bridge to end the unnatural and endless suffering that consumes your very soul.CFFJR wrote:You are correct sir.

Well, actually, I thought it was pretty good. The game does drag (oh does it ever), but the battles flow faster, the dungeons are shorter, and the stories are more interesting. Dragon Quest VII isn't a 100 hour long game; it's 20, five hour long games. I did quit playing after about 10 hours or so before all the class change shenanigans, but I enjoyed what I played.
Re: Dragon Quest 8 Opinions?
Yeah, it's a fun game, but it's LOOOONNGGG. And it takes an hour or two before your first battle. The game certainly takes its time. And every area is a fully self-contained story that's reasonably sized, so about midway through I forgot why I was doing what I was doing.ZeoDefender wrote:Our human minds were not designed to comprehend the true awfulness of Dragon Quest VII. Re: Dragon Quest 8 Opinions?
I really liked the self-contained stories and that's the main reason I enjoyed it while strongly disliking Dragon Quest VIII. In Dragon Quest VIII, the entire plot is just you following Dhoulmagus from town to identical town while completing fetch quests. However, in Dragon Quest VII, every few hours you come across a brand new story in a new setting. It's long yes, but as I said, if you look at it as a series of mini-RPGs it's not so bad.MrPopo wrote:Yeah, it's a fun game, but it's LOOOONNGGG. And it takes an hour or two before your first battle. I'm really looking forward to the 3DS release.

"Jessica, Yangus, Angelo." That's off the top of my head, but I can't even remember any of my party members' names from most other RPGs. After 80 hours with these guys I considered them friends. I was delighted to find Angelo in Fortune Street for Wii.
DQ8's soundtrack is permanently burned into my brain, which is a good thing since it's beautiful and fully orchestrated. I imported the soundtrack CD just for good measure.
I liked how the game case came in an exterior cardboard box.
I love how the in-game colors pop without ever coming off as having been made for children. I want to experience this game again, in re-cap form, because I'm not sure I can sink another 80 hours into the experience, but it sure would be lovely to briefly re-visit the places I walked through in Trodain.

Re: Dragon Quest 8 Opinions?
DQ VIII did take a different approach, since Level-5 was behind the development, and it is quite refreshing. But it is DQ... so expect the grind fest to happen!

Now see, this just makes me want to play it.
