Best Mario Kart game!! (Poll)

Oddly enough, considering how poorly most of the N64 library has aged, I'd say Mario Kart 64 is the best. The races were fun, the battle courses are the best the series has ever seen and the mechanics weren't total bs as the series is now known for.

The series has never been as fun as it was during the N64 days.

The DS and 3DS versions are my favourite. The 3DS version gains the upper hand due to the great controls and online modes.

Double Dash must be good since you can't find a complete copy for less than $20 on eBay

For now though, I will continue to enjoy Super Circuit for the fact that it's a perfect portable game and the original SNES tracks make an appearance.

I guess it's fortunate that it also supported the GCN and Classic Controllers.

I don't understand why 64 is everyone's favorite. It never seemed like anything special, the tracks were forgettable, and Diddy Kong Racing absolutely blows it out of the water. What am I missing?

DKR never really had the crossover appeal like Mario Kart 64. It'd be unwise to discount the sheer amount of goodwill the latter's stirred from it being just about everybody's favourite 4-way multiplayer; it tends to live on strongly in its social nostalgia as well as gaming. I mean, I still hear of non-retro folk cracking out their N64s to play Kart64 with mates.

I can't speak for its quality, mind. My memories of Mario Kart 64 aren't all that strong, despite my recalling a fandom of it at the time.

I'd have to go with DD. It was just such a robust, polished game overall, and toyed with new gameplay mechanics.

I agree that MK Wii was a step back; maybe not so much as that, but more like -pfft!- here it is! It definitely seemed as if it was just put out to placate the masses with a new installment. IMO Mario Kart 7 is everything that the Wii version should have been; it just seems to have more substance.

I've enjoyed all of them but Mario Kart 64 is the only one I was obsessed with. While I was in college I used to have marathon sessions with friends. They'd come over to my apartment and play until the early hours of the morning.
