Here's a question: After I finished the first couple of story missions, it booted me back to the menu. What do I have to do to unlock the rest of it?

You need to earn more tickets through races to unlock additional Story missions.

Hmm. That seems odd. You'd think the story mode would be open from the start and you'd use the tickets to unlock something else, like bonus tracks or something. Oh well. Thanks for the info!

I recommend either the Astro Robin (Jack Levin) or Deep Claw (Octoman) as worthwhile ships to buy and try out. I generally use the deep claw, set to max speed on most tracks, although for really fiddly ones I'll add a lot more acceleration.

As for corners, make sure to use L and R buttons a lot. You can often get around corners easier by holding the corresponding button whilst turning. For really sharp corners, I use the manoeuvre where you press the opposite shoulder button to the direction of the corner, quickly followed by the matching one (so L > R for right turns, R > L for left turns) to do a sharp turn that will help you get around 90 degree turns with ease.

Add to this the tiniest amount of airbrake from the triggers. Once you get used to these subtle movements you will find that by varying degrees of steering and airbrake you can make it around most corners (until you have to learn to drift, but that's for another day  )
This may be my problem. I appreciate analog control, but with the small analog thumb nubs most controllers provide, I find it too fiddly to really perform nuanced actions. I compensated on the Dreamcast and Saturn by pushing the analog nub forward to the top of its range and simply rolling it a little left or right to give me a wider range of stick motion with a more graduated response, but it seems that trick doesn't work in F-Zero.

Is there a particular type of controller that might help with this? I don't mind having a larger range of motion if it means a more graduated response.
PS1 Flight Stick? Well, a very hard to find item. However, you can use any large analog stick or even a steering wheel with a Mayflash adapter.

Geez... I don't love this game enough to go through all that. I'll try playing some more, only with Cap Falcon instead of the gangster dude. Loved his craft in the original F-Zero, but not so much in GX.

Black Bull was my favorite in X, but he's really hard to handle in GX.

I haven't beaten all the story missions yet, but I've gotten pretty far. It's possible!

Maybe a steering wheel that plugs direct into the Gamecube?

Thrustmaster has one with PS2, GC, and USB plugs. Works with PS3 also.

Kind of small, but it's cheap and works pretty well.
