The X series has more holes than Swiss cheese. Zero even contradicts himself.

So who was made first X or Zero? X is never even mentioned in Classic but Zero has a cameo in Bass' ending in Power battles. Zero dies in X, gets rebuilt in 2, dies in X5 but shows up in X6 which shouldn't even be taking place. He's more or less the Main Character in X7 even though the story has nothing to do with him. X8 Sigma dies for good...yet Zero is still fine and his X6 ending still doesn't make sense in this context other than "it's in the future" Then you have Omega which is Zero's original Body and then Zero.... who...Hate that redesign.

it's just AGHHHHHHHHHHHh the Storyline in X makes no sense!

Classic it's Dr Wily is up to something STOP HIM. or Dr Wily framed somebody...stop him..or
Dr Wily is up to his old tricks stop him Agent P....

I think that X can be reasonable considered to have a superior formula compared to the classic Mega Man games (this is coming from a huge Mega Man fan). The inclusion of dashing and wall jumping makes all the difference.

Adding the mechanic of gaining and controlling momentum makes the game significantly more fast paced and makes dealing with challenges and obstacles through reaction much easier, allowing for more dynamic challenges in the game. Wall jumping opens up a whole new dimension to approaching obstacles and especially in boss fights. By creating more complexity in what Mega Man can do, the developers were able to create greater complexity in both the level and boss designs than what the series had seen before. Vertical segments became much more feasible than in early Mega Man games. Bosses could have patterns or attacks that dominated the ground because Mega Man gained significant mobility in the air. Dodging as a whole became a much better integrated mechanic because Mega Man suddenly had the necessary tools to do so.

Don't get me wrong I still love Mega Man Classic, but Mega Man X is just a more dynamic game with more engaging mechanics. Couple this with enhanced graphics, music, and atmosphere (admittedly sort of an unfair comparison because the series are primarily on different consoles) and you have an all around upgrade to the Mega Man formula.

To be fair, X5 was intended by Inafune to be the last Mega Man X game. Everything that comes after that is a disaster because it was forced into the storyline. I would also hesitate to praise Mega Man classic for it's deep and engaging story by comparison

It still works even with X6 but where did X7 and X8 come from? I tend to think of X7 and X8 taking place sometime between X4 and X5... and Lumine just being nuts...

but that still doesn't fix the storyline mess.

It still doesn't explain where Zero Came from he's a reploid, Dr Wily made him like Dr Light Made X.. but why? and Sigma...where did he come from? Did Dr Cain Build him?

Am I the only one who doesn't give a shit about the Mega Man story? To me, it's *never* been about the story. It's just pure action awesomeness.

I like the X series a lot since I grew up playing a lot of 5 and 6 (never did beat 6 though).

My first experience with Mega Man X was the original on DOS though. I remember it not playing all that well.

Now that I'm a bit older, I think I like the simplicity of the original saga more than I used to. X5 still remains as my favorite Mega Man game though, followed shortly by Mega Man 2.

For the record, I was super surprised to find that people actually take the story of the X series seriously. I never even bothered watching the cut scenes. To me it was always "You're a blue robot man. Go shoot other crazy robot creatures in cool environments."
Older. Not wiser.

I am playing X4 in Japanese so I don't but the fact they tried to give X an extensive backstory...there is too much that goes unexplained that should be and probably won't be.

By the way Zero was SUPPOSED to be the main character... so the story was a clusterfuck from the start.

Capcom and fuckwittery... 20 years strong.

The story's not that complicated really. Zero is not a reploid. He's like X, an original creation. Reploids are based on X's design, and are all inferior to X because no one can succesfully copy Light's masterpiece but Light himself. Dr. Wily made Zero to destroy Mega Man, and possibly X if he knew about him. Sigma was a reploid built by Cain, like most reploids. In his first encounter with Zero, he contracted some sort of computer program or virus that was originally put into Zero by Wily. Sigma's been evil and insane ever since. In a strange way, Sigma is Zero's savior, despite being his mortal enemy throughout the series. According to MMX 5's story though, there still seems to be some trace of Zero's original programming in him.

As for who came first, X or Zero? That's a mystery. The answer depends on how brilliant you think Wily is. Could he have created something so great as Zero on his own, or was it a copy of X's design? Even it was, you have to give Wily props. Zero is every bit as powerful as X (though X fanboys will debate this)while none of Cain's X copies are. I think Zero is Wily's own design personally. I think that Power Battles cutscene subtley hints at this. You would think that after years of trying to create something strong enough to destroy Mega Man he would eventually succeed. Maybe that's the real reason Light created X. I think the dark energy in MM 8 is also connected to Zero's creation

After X5, the story does get a bit ridiculous, but is mostly still explainable. Zero is brought back to life in MM X6 either by the Dr. Light hologram or more likely by Isaac, who the game strongly hints has some kind of connection to Dr. Wily. In fact, X5 strongly suggest that Wily is still around somehow. Maybe his consciousness is in a robot body? Or in a computer somewhere? Who knows? I don't know if Inafune ever addressed this, but there are clues everywhere in X 5 that Wily is back.

It's interesting to note that the Maverick Hunter X series on the PSP was going to retell the story of the series with a few significant changes

The story of the MM X games is one of the reasons I love them. It ain't Shakespeare, but it's more interesting than the barely there story of the classic series. Wily makes robots, Mega Man kills them, sequel comes out, same thing happens again. Boring. The X series took the bland story from the classic series and finally did something interesting with it, mostly revolving around Zero.

as such the Zero Series Should have been WAY better than it ended up being. the Redesign of Zero one of the glaring flaws.

Plus the whole Cyber Elf deal... WHY was this not a series in and of it self?

As for Dr Wily, He also should have had his own game could have been great. I also think he's more capable than his 5000000 losses indecate. He created Bass after all the only rival OG Mega Man had. He worked with Dr Light so who knows how many of his ideas Dr Light used and never gave him credit for.

What if WHAT IF...everything was Wily's idea...and Dr Light was plagiarizing him all along...

DUN DUN DUN...

I know that's digging too deep but whatever Capcom made that choice when they decided to complicate the storyline.
