Sega CD hardware is often region locked too. You usually can't just import a CD unit to play import games, most versions detect the console's region.

With the X'eye, it seems like you need to get an adapter with it. Seems like this cart has almost perfect compatibility, aside from some NTSC <--> PAL issues.

I'm currently debating whether I'd rather have this, or a JP Mega CD. Although the MegaCart also acts as a flash cart and a backup memory cartridge.

That's a limited flash cart. Only support for 3MB or less games, can't save progress.

X'eye was an NTSC exclusive release. PAL games would run at 60hz on unmodded X'eye systems. Usually fine for cart games unless speed optimized, I don't know about CDs.

If you get a JP Mega CD you'll need to region mod your Genesis. And the built in BIOS will play only JP CD games.

Without messing with hardware mods or add-ons, perhaps the easiest way to play Mega CD games on your NA Sega CD (at least in the short term) is to copy the Mega CD ISO, patch it with the NA region setting, and re-burn the CD. It works just fine.

I made a step-by-step tutorial on burning Mega CDs to be played on a Sega CD on my homepage here:

I actually have a European Mega CD II which I'm using along with my Everdrive (which is used for loading the appropriate BIOS image for the game I'm playing), but it doesn't work with everything which is why I'm looking at a BIOS mod now.

One other thing you can do if you're playing burned games is to change the region setting for the particular game you want to play so it plays nice with your Sega CD. Here's the program for that: http://www.retrodev.com/convscd.html
Curious: Everdrive MD or Mega Everdrive? I know the Mega came out later and fixed some problems that the Everdrive MD had... I have a Mega, haven't played too much with loading the different CD BIOSes on it, so I was wondering if that was the one you had.

If it was, I guess I have another system to BIOS mod :/
