What's The Best Uses of "Mainstream" Music in Game

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

Rez was nice. I wouldn't say it really mainstream, but the artists are real musicians not attached to the video game world. And Adam Freeland spins some sick shit! (the others are kinda dry, and meh, but I really do like Freeland)
Agreed. Crazy Taxi's music matched perfectly to the game IMHO. Playing the PC, GC and PS2 versions just seemed weird.

With Rez the music was great too. Im not a fan of that kind of music but those tunes rocked.

Other games, like someone else has said, the Wipeout series.

How about Lumines?

I think Gwar was only in the genesis version but still none of their music was actually in it.

I've always loved the Tony Hawk soundtracks, I personally loved the License Music that was used in Bioshock, I thought the music fits the mood perfectly, just imagine yourself you are in a room all alone and you would hear Bing Crosby in the background, until the shoot out start and they accidentally shot the Phonograph and has that broken record sound.

they were still in the snes version but weren't exactly front and center like they were in the genesis version. the plot of the game still revolved around them trying to get to a gwar show.

gwar has played here like 5 times in the last 4 years and i haven't gone once. probably never will, haha.

I always really liked the Spencer Nielsen soundtrack on Ecco the Dolphin on Sega CD though it was a soundtrack written specifically for the game. Of course the music snippets on the cart version of Ecco were pretty good too but they weren't by Nielsen.

I always thought the Gran Turismo was more of a distraction than a help, but it was mainstream stuff, at least on the later versions. That said, none of that music appealed to me, I guess I'm just a little to old to be considered part of the market audience for such games. The only song I immediately recognized was Panama by Van Halen which wouldn't have been my first choice even if I could only select songs from Van Halen.

As mentioned above, the Grand Theft Auto games had a great selection of music. Even at that, I most often listen to the talk radio stations, those are an absolute riot, there's some wonderful writing in there.
