Re: End of console, and Media based gaming?
I remember back in the first days of EverQuest, I had dial-up. We had to plan for patches so that everyone else in the house could use the computer for internet. We'd wait until night and it was usually done in the morning. And man, I almost went linkdead every time the boat would zone in. =D My family was so amazed when we got DSL for the first time. We were like, "Why didn't we get this sooner?!"
I wonder how long it would take to do that 8.3GB download back then. Unless you live in a city or in a suburban area with people that have money, you are screwed internet wise. Especially people like me that prefers rural areas. =) I love living in the woods, though. I can't complain too much. =D

When your out in the boonies, ain't much internet. We had to give up amazing sattelite download speeds so we could get passable upload speeds. Thus, long as hell downloads.Menegrothx wrote:How is that even possibleForlorn Drifter wrote: Y'know, I waited the two and a half days it took for TF2 to download

Um guys, don't forget Asia and Europe are muuuuuch more urbanized than the US. So they won't be losing much market share cause of poor internet connections if they implement this.

This is a good point, but if they loose a part of US's market, it's still a major loss. Americans buy just as much as Europe. Of course, the small country of Japan buys more than the US and Europe combined. Companies would be have to make major expensive changes. If it will happen, I predict within 2020-2030. Technology is still getting more advanced every decade, so maybe the US will get better at keeping the country connected.ZeroAX wrote:Um guys, don't forget Asia and Europe are muuuuuch more urbanized than the US. You have to think that majority of modern gamers just want to play the latest games on the latest technologies. Hell, they'd rather play classic games on the latest technologies. Same goes with everything else. People had Beta Tapes, VHS, DVD, Blue-ray, and now you just download straight to devices. Console gaming will go away eventually, and we have to accept that. It's not the Nintendo Era anymore. Game collecting and nostalgia is an awesome thing, but not everyone is into it. The greater opinion will win, which is the newest and latest technologies.

According to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Urbanization_by_country out of European nations only Sweden, Denmark, UK, Iceland, Monaco, Belgium, San Marino, Malta and Andorra are more urbanized than the United States. 4 of those are tiny city states. There's more to Europe than just Bruessels and London. Though according to that Japan has an urban population of 66% and India 29%, which is hard to believe, when you take into account their population densities (337 km^2 and 370 km^2, UK has a population density of 255.6 km^2 while it has an urban population is 90%)ZeroAX wrote:Um guys, don't forget Asia and Europe are muuuuuch more urbanized than the US.

Lol, I don't know how those statistics are calculated, but Athens and Thessaloniki alone put together count for 60-70% (low-high estimate) of the population of my country. That's without counting many other smaller cities....Menegrothx wrote:According to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Urbanization_by_country out of European nations only Sweden, Denmark, UK, Iceland, Monaco, Belgium, San Marino, Malta and Andorra are more urbanized than the United States. 4 of those are tiny city states.
