Library was fun to charge into the high tier stuff and let other civs discover the wheel for you.

Of course, even Library's OPness is nothing compared to the OPness of Creative in MoO2. Research 2-5 technologies for the price of 1, every time? Sign my ass up.

Civ 1 was my first Civilization game and I absolutely love it, but I suspect part of that is from nostalgia.

Civ II is HIGHLY recommended, although I actually think III is the best in the series. I don't give a heck about IV and V. I liked IV, but it seemed dumped down compared to II and III for some reason.

Alpha Centauri uses the Civ II engine in space (or was it a proto-CivIII engine?), but added some new things that were included in Civ III. I really like the new border feature in it.

As for Sim City; SCII is the one that really set the foundation for the rest of the series. SCIII is basically SCIV lite, IMO, and SCIV took everything to the next level. Once I played SCIV, I NEVER went back to earlier games. It is THAT GOOD. I would say don't even bother with SCII. You should be able to start slowly with SCIV, using tutorials, and go from there. It is my favourite PC strategy game, even above CivII. Some of the mods available for it are just incredible, and the modding community is still very active today. In fact, SCIV is so good and refined, that I do not honestly believe it can be topped. It can only be remastered and refined (which the modding community already does!).

If there was ONE game I could only play for the rest of my life, it would be Sim City 4. Civilization III would be next, although CivII would be fine as well.

Hmm. Breetai if you are saying that Simcity 4 is that good, I will look into it. Ive hesitated to move onto other Simcity's - 1 being my favorite, but if you are saying it is that good, well I trust your opinion and Ill have to give it a another go.

My first Civ was IV, but I've been liking V way more.

Xeogred, have you tried the Tropico games?

The change to hex movement and no stacking in V was huge. It completely changed how the military aspect plays out. I think anyone who likes Civ should try it out, rather than assuming it's just another iteration on IV.

And with Gods and Kings the game is far more fleshed out. I remember that one of the biggest early criticisms of V was the lack of espionage and religion.

But they're super customizable. (Well, IV is. I haven't played V yet.)

I really do think it is that good, yes.

Check out http://www.simtropolis.com/ for all the mods. There is some BEAUTIFUL stuff there.

I guess there is a new Sim City game coming next year, but... I don't care.

@AmishSamurai - Nah I haven't played any of the Tropico games, but I've stumbled upon them before. Looking them up again... yeah I've been pretty curious about these too.

I have dabbled into SimCity 2000 since my last post here. It definitely seems pretty cool, but I wonder if I want something a bit more mission/goal oriented... if that makes sense? It just seems like something I could spend a good random day with, but carry on and not go back to that city or whatnot afterwards... I'm not sure. Maybe IV feels more "progressive" in a sense.

An issue I have is that it seems like 2000 just kind of throws you out there, so I still don't have a full grasp on it. Wasn't really seeing any tutorial or anything unless I missed it... but maybe the manual helps, I'll have to download that from GOG and look it over.
