I remember my 2000 slim being the same way. However, for me, it was that games would NOT play with composite cables. Only video.
When I got the component cables, the games would play, but in the aforementioned "little black box in the middle of the screen."
Needless to say, other than it being a novelty for a few minutes, I've never hooked it back up. I had more fun using Remote Joy and playing on my PC monitor over USB.
