To promote trading with friends. You know how Nintendo is with their family and friend interactions. As was mentioned, some Pokemon are exclusive to specific versions, so you need to trade with someone who has that specific 'Mon if you want it.
I have no idea what the game is like. Am I supposed to gather little mothers and beat others monsters with, RPG turn based style?
Pretty much. You battle the monsters and capture them, and then train them for your own purposes. As a thumbs up there is a general story progression, so you aren't just mindlessly capturing monsters to raise so you can capture more monsters. Although you could do that if you wanted.

As for game recommendations, Pokemon Crystal is the best of the GB/C games. But I also recommend HeartGold/SoulSilver and Platinum for DS. Those are my two top favorite Pokemon games, and, as been mentioned already, HG/SS are remakes of Gold and Silver, so you really can't go wrong with it.

Two reasons:

1. To promote trading. For completionists, you need to trade with someone who owns the opposite version for Pokemon not found in your game. The Pokemon are deliberately divided up so no one game has all the Pokemon. In every set, there are a few missing that can only be found in one version or the other.

2. The other reason of course is that GameFreak sells way more copies this way. This is one of the keys to the crazy success of the Pokmeon brand, and why Pokemon Red and Blue outsold anything on either the N64 or PS1.

Pokemon games are turn based RPGs where you assume the role of an upstart Pokemon trainer who seeks to enter what is essentially a tournament to decide the best trainer in the region.

It's like a lot of other RPGs - random battles, magic spells, visiting towns, exploring the world, fighting off a great evil, becoming the hero, etc. The main difference in Pokemon is just that instead of simply encountering and battling with monsters you encounter for gold and exp, here you have the chance to catch and then use those enemy monsters you encounter.

The idea is to start with just one Pokemon and eventually capture one of each that you see, and train up to six different monsters at once. Might sound dumb, but it's incredibly addictive and the appeal also manages to break both age and gender gaps. Boys, girls, men and women all play Pokemon, so you know there's gotta be something to it.

Yes, you and your mothers will go on a grand journey to beat everyone else's mothers all across the land! After much practice, you will become a master of mothers! ;P

Coincidentally the originals are my site's "game of the month" so I have a little write up about them. Might answer some of your questions.

The thing with Pokemon is that the appeal can't really be expressed in words - you just need to play it for yourself and see if you like it or not. Part of the appeal for a lot of people are the layers - on the surface, its a kids game with cute cuddly critters, but there's quite a bit of strategy involved as well as some hardcore math figuring out how to raise the strongest Pokemon you can. Check out the Pokemon wiki called bulbapedia if you want to learn more on just how crazy complex Pokemon can be.

I'm honestly surprised you don't know a thing about the pokemon series. They are the second biggest franchise in gaming after mario, and they are extremely imbued in popular culture at this point, to where you would have to live under a rock to not know anything about the series.

IMO, they are definitely are not the best RPG's in the world by far, and if you didn't play them as a kid, or at least a young age, the pokemon ship has kind of sailed, as all the grinding is going to bore you.

But, if you have at least a DS/lite and you want to try and collect all the pokemon, you might as well start with Fire Red and Leaf Green on the GBA.

He lives in... Lithuania I think? I forget exactly where

...but it's probably pretty close to being "under a rock" as far as stuff like this goes

Perhaps, but I'm guessing he understands english? Because on any search on the internet will bring you pokemon, especially if it's gaming related searches.

Obviously it would be a whole lot easier to ignore pokemon in Lithuania than in area's where video games make their biggest business, but still, it's not like pre-internet days here, but yet then again I don't know exactly all that much about the state of Lithuania, or how life is there.

Yeah that sounds right.

I think I just pulled a random country out of a hat. Wanted to say it started with L but I think yours sounds more correct.
