Could you forward a link with a well documented illustration of how the mod is supposed to look like? A few searches only netted me sites with modders going into detail about the language switch and addressing the 50/60hz one only vaguely. In the end I had to find a youtube video and pause it to figure out where between the JP points the wires are supposed to go and where they should go on the switch.ApolloBoy wrote:The region checking is done entirely in software, the game checks the region settings of the console it's running, and if they don't match up with what the game expects, it'll refuse to play.kamiboy wrote:But if anyone is privy to how some Genesis games go about their region locking be sure to share, I am a bit curious.
Are you sure you did the region switch properly? It's fairly well documented at this point so I'm thinking maybe you may have done it halfway. If you did the switch correctly it should pass the lockout. It's the same exact same thing for jumpers JP1 and JP2 when attempting to play region locked Japanese games on a non-Japanese system.
I used this video:
Thing is before soldering I noticed that there was continuity between JP3 top and bottom which no amount of scraping away would remove. I think that might be the issue as according to the video what the mod does is either connect JP3 top and bottom or JP3 and JP4.

Is it possible that the game does the region check more than once? As you're running the game, it periodically does the check?

No, the game never boots up. I only get a black screen with white text explaining that the game is designed for PAL systems no matter where I flip the switch and turn on the console.gtmtnbiker wrote:Is it possible that the game does the region check more than once? Anyone with a switch mod actually have a copy of Wily Wars they can test out?
Would help if a person with a 50/60hz switch in PAL land could try and boot up Wily Wars in 60hz to see if they get the message or not.

This guide works very well for me: http://www.mmmonkey.co.uk/console/sega/md1switches.htmkamiboy wrote:Could you forward a link with a well documented illustration of how the mod is supposed to look like?

Yes. The subtlety of the mega drive logo (not to mention its "high tech" font for the time) make it look very professional. Like a good piece of hardware. Plus I really like the red buttons on the Mega Drive 2 (the one I ownGameMasterGuy wrote: Holy crap, those make the American products look practically third party XD

I have to admit, the PAL Mega Drive 1 does look pretty sexy, but in my opinion the PAL Mega Drive 2 looks like shat compared to the Genesis model 2. Unlike you, I think those red buttons make it look third rate and not elite. And why doesn't it have the glorious MEGA DRIVE title emblazoned above the cart slot? It's just pushed off to the side. It looked good like that on the PAL model 1, but it just doesn't work for the overall design on model 2 systems, IMO BTW again.ZeroAX wrote:Buy a PAL Mega Drive?
To be honest seeing that ugly Genesis logo on it is blasphemy to us Sega purists![]()

Yeah, I have an American Genesis 2, and it looks pretty lackluster, to say the least.ZeroAX wrote:Yes. I feel the same about those black buttons, I think nothing can be done about it since we both grew up with different "official" releases.
Nah I will have to insist that not having the name of the console there is a good idea. Cause the emphasis is put on the SEGA logo. Classy if you ask me
