Re: New versus used
Developers get my money for something new when they give me something to make it worthwhile. The last few games I have purchased brand new have all been on the Wii actually; SMG 2, DKC Returns, Lost in Shadow, Castle of Shikigami III, Sin & Punishment 2, Metroid: Other M, Skyward Sword, Xenoblade, and I already have my Last Story reserved. For some reason I haven't even considered buying a brand new PS3 title quite yet, not even Lollipop Chainsaw, which I'm very much interested in. $60 is just too rich for my blood.
The market is different these days, and it will always be evolving, so tough titties for anyone who can't sell their games. I know it's harsh, but that's just the way things go.

Re: New versus used
I've never understood (in real-world terms, not in philosophy) the idea that because someone bought a used copy it negated a legitimate sale ... all they're doing is taking the hypothetical (never actually researched) piracy idea and applying it to used game sales ... it's complete nonsense.
The truth of the matter is they're segmenting their market with their business practices and seeing diluted returns from their efforts and instead of altering tactics they're just pushing even deeper into that terrain.
It's going to bottom out and they're not going to be able to support these big projects any longer. They're trying brute force solutions for things that need something a bit more elegant.
Anyway, buying new or used, my money likely doesn't go to the developer anyway, so I don't really worry about. It's also not my personal responsibility to ensure that a publisher, store, distributor, or whomever, runs their business correctly.
It's absolutely ludicrous to say that, Oh how dare you buy my product in any form other than the one I deemed appropriate ... don't you know it's your personal responsibility to ensure my family eats!? HOW DARE YOU SIR! It doesn't matter that it may be the ONLY price point you could experience the game at ... and it doesn't matter that you didn't actually steal the game or pirate it. (piracy is not theft)
Give me a break.
I buy what I can afford for the quality of the product I expect. Retailers tend to do a fine job undervaluing their stock of items anyway and publishers don't seem to care about sales outside of the first month of release.

What about it? I have several other firearms (they were bought used though).

The average gun someone owns is a pistol or shotgun or hunting rifle.

Re: New versus used
games for new(er) systems, if the money will go to the devs or company that released the game, I'll buy it new. Otherwise I really don't care all that much. I'm the same way with records; if I can order it from the record label or artist, I'll buy from them. Otherwise, a good condition used copy is just fine.

Need FreeMCboot? I'll install it on your PS2 Memory Card for free if you cover postage both ways.

Do you have a source on that? Ak-47's are as common as dirt. One of the most common firearms on earth (and I've known a lot of people that take them hunting, guess that makes them one of those 'hunting' rifles you were talking about.) And I do have a pistol, a shotgun, and a bolt-action rifle, amongst others, and can reload my own ammunition (costs about half the price to shoot that way.) I live about 20 miles from a world class shooting range. They have a 600 yard rifle range, a 200 yard silhouette range (for long range handguns), a steel plate range for short range handguns and about ten other ranges for various set-ups. About the only thing I hunt is paper and clay pigeons (but you can bet that if I ever did need to hunt animals, or defend my home, I would be able) and it is an absolute blast. You should try it sometime.

Re: New versus used
Technically speaking, nearly everything I buy is used as I collect mostly retro games that are out of print.
Now if we're talking current gen games, it's a mixture of new/used. I generally will only buy at launch (for full price) if I think the game may become scarce fairly quickly (which is why I pre-ordered Gungnir, Growlanser, and Last Story). Otherwise, I wait for the game to come down in price. For instance, I haven't picked up Tales of Graces f yet, once it's less than $40 I will consider it.
As far as used current gen games go, I have trust the seller. GameStop is out, I've been burned by them too many times. I stick mainly to online retailers for used stuff.

Re: New versus used
It depends. I mostly buy used games though there are some games I will buy new if it's a franchise or just a certain title that I care about.
I don't often buy games on release at full price though. I'm not the type of person that needs to be the first to play something. I can probably count the numbers of games I bought at their release time on my fingers and most of those are probably handheld games that weren't as expensive as console titles.
