Re: Earth Defense Force (360)
Uncommonly known fun fact: EDF 2017 is the third game in the series, but is actually an elaborate remake of the first game, released in Europe as Monster Attack.
Anyone who likes 2017 really OWES it to themselves to pick up Global Defense Force for PS2. Only released in Europe though, so you'll need a region switch boot disc, a modded PS2 or a PAL PS2 as well as a tv that can display a PAL 50 signal.
It's a lot of hoops to jump through if you're a North American gamer, but man is Global Defense Force awesome.
Alternatively, you can pick up the Japanese PSP port: Earth Defense Forces 2 on UMD. The PSP version is the same game, but with controls adjusts and graphics reduced to what the PSP can handle. Any way you slice it EDF2 is the best game in the series so far.

I was so excited the first time I saw the SNES "Earth Defense Force," because I thought that it was an earlier game in this series. I would have been super disappointed if I had bought it.
Is it any good as a shooter?

It is like playing a B scifi movie. If you go into it with the same attitude you'll probably enjoy it. If you go in expecting greatness you'll be disappointed.

The SNES game is pretty mediocre. You can do worse but you can do a whole ton better.threetoed wrote:I was so excited the first time I saw the SNES "Earth Defense Force," because I thought that it was an earlier game in this series. I would have been super disappointed if I had bought it.

I'd love to play Global Defense Force someday.

The first two were released in Japan as well as Europe.Satoshi_Matrix wrote: Anyone who likes 2017 really OWES it to themselves to pick up Global Defense Force for PS2. ^still an import, but at least in NTSC so it's slightly less hoops to jump through.
I tell ya, the Simple 2000 series is full of gold (if you don't mind sorting through the shit, haha).

yes, but only the European games are in English, which is important for figuring out what weapons you have. Most of the voice acting is completely removed from the Japanese versions, but the dialogue is as mindless in Japanese as it is in English in 2017.

But the mindless dialogue is one of the most hilariously awesome parts
.
Anyway I'm hoping that EDF4 will be a sort-of remake of Global Defense Force in the same way 2017 is of the first game.

Re: Earth Defense Force (360)
Thanks guys. I'll have to stick to the 360 games for now, seeing as I don't have a PS2, and will more than likely only be getting a BC PS3.
Now, to see if I can actually FIND a copy... locally.

Re: Earth Defense Force (360)
I'm with you on that, but I don't really want an HD remake of GDF as much as I want a new title from Sandlot that recycles the ideas that worked and tweaks them. I want to see the PaleWing and Solider come back, but maybe give the PaleWing a roll or something to make her a bit more effective on land. The soldier doesn't need to fly, but there are times when it would be helpful for him to at least be able to climb ladders or something like that.Gunstar Green wrote:Anyway I'm hoping that EDF4 will be a sort-of remake of Global Defense Force in the same way 2017 is of the first game.
Why not pick up a PS2 as well? You can find them pretty cheap if you keep your eyes peeled.Forlorn Drifter wrote:Thanks guys. I'll have to stick to the 360 games for now, seeing as I don't have a PS2, and will more than likely only be getting a BC PS3.

As for finding EDF 2017 locally and cheaply, it's weird. When I picked up 2017 in 2007ish, it was an extremely obscure game and I found a copy for $20 new. I then bought another copy last year to give to a friend. I paid $11 for it used.
Now when I look in used game stores, I see it for $27-35 used. The game must have had a surge in popularity lately. I'd like to take credit for it spreading the word of EDF across my blog and such, but that's a bit much even for my influence!
