I inherited my wife's 2nd gen iPod Touch last night after she picked up a shiny new iPad.

After wiping it, I headed over to Hardcore Gaming 101 to look through this article. I was able to download a handful of pretty good titles from that list. The biggest issue I keep running into is that the 2nd gen won't play the later games. That means nothing from Cave or Taito.

That said, I've really taken a liking to Super Laser and HotField.

I also made a conductive stylus for more precise control.

Has anyone tried out Raystorm or Rayforce yet? Do they support 2 player co-op via blutooth?

I bought Assault Squadron last night. I was sold after a few minutes with the demo...errr... lite version.

The production value on this thing is outstanding. It feels like a long lost Dreamcast euro-shmup, which means it may not be for everyone. The levels alternate from horizontal and vertical (think Life Force/Salamander). There's a pretty bad ass announcer who gives details about options and missions. They even went all out with CG videos that tie the stages together.

The difficulty can be a little on the extreme side. Some of the bullet patterns approach danmaku levels, but they still have that distinct, punishing euro direction. Hit boxes are larger than the modern Japan releases', too. People struggled with the controls in the early versions. Things appear to have been ironed out now, but the game is still very unforgiving. That's not necessarily a bad thing. It was refreshing to play an iOS shmup with spot on controls and a punishing difficulty I would expect from the 16 bit era.

It's kind of amusing because, now that I think about it, there isn't any kind of difficulty curve. The game is just hard. It starts out difficult and unforgiving and it stays that way.

Assault Squadron was released pre iPhone 4, so it runs on anything that can run iOS 3.0. Even then, it feels like a more modern release. The game runs at a pretty solid 60fps (their claim and I believe it) and rarely chops.

Other than the punishing difficulty, the only other flaw I could find with the game is that the bosses take way too long to kill and one of the ships has a pretty worthless special attack against stronger enemies.

I just downloaded FireHawk. It looks like the full game is free on the App Store for now. It's from the same group who made HotField. It runs pretty well on older devices, too. It has a PSX feel to it with some crude 3D objects and textures. Some really nice bullet patterns.

This one feels a bit more solid than HotField. The bullet time gimmick has been dropped in favor of a double tap charge shot and a traditional bomb for double touch.

Add: Finally got to play with my headphones on (at work). Hehe, there's some un-licensed music in this one... "Can You Dig It" from the GitS PSX soundtrack loops in the options menu and the boss music is a looping sample from the Chemical Brothers' "Three Little Birdies Down Beats" off the Exit Planet Dust album.

Give Dragon Flight a try! It's pretty cool for a free iOS shoot-em-up. Not very deep, but fun.

Thanks for the tip. Downloading now. My Amazon stylus came in today, too!

Edit: Pretty fun shmup. The yellow dragons can go to hell, though.

I had about $7 worth of birthday monies left on on a gift card. I blew it all on the app store.

I picked up Super Laser, R-Type and Absolute Instant as well as some other un-shmup related titles.

R-Type is a fantastic port. At only 99 cents, why don't you already have it??? It looks and sounds great and offers a few different control options (sorry, no iCade support). The relative 1:1 is probably the best option here. Aren't I talented with my left handed conductive stylus play? LOL @ the inclusion of speed up power ups when using 1:1.

Super Laser is a Raiden clone, but a really solid one. Just when I think I'm about to get bored, the game changes things up. The music is fantastic.

Absolute Instant is a bullet hell shooter that takes into account the ease of bullet dodging with the 1:1 touch controls on an iOS device and kicks things up a notch with impossible bullet curtains. As the only means to dodge, your ship has the capability to teleport by touching another area of the screen. You can do this 3 times rapidly before your ship needs to recharge. The game has a rather ambitious story for a an iOS shmup, putting a sci-fi twist on the biblical tale of Adam and Eve.

Just got a FB update from SNK. Blazing Star is available for iOS and Android today! Correct me if I'm wrong, but this is the first time the game has seen a release outside Neo hardware.

Unfortunately, it requires later generation iOS devices. I will have to do without for now.

Add:

Youtube Trailer

Relative touch, swipe and even iCade support have all been confirmed.

Just spent half an hour with Blazing Star on phaedrus's iPad. Great port! Even has 50% and 100% scanline options.

The touch isn't "1:1". SNK kept speed attributes in for each ship, so you can't just zoom around as fast as you can swipe your finger. The faster ships are pretty close to 1:1, but the slower ships are more like dragging something around on a tether. It's not as bad as it sounds. It reminds me of"Assault Squadron", also on iOS, in that respect.

At 2.99, it's a fantastic deal.
