I think furries are people who just like anthropomorphized animals a lot. There are some who will draw any and all characters from other sources as animal people, write fanfics, and such. Some have a so called 'fursona' that is them as their favorite animal hybrid. Some will cosplay as said animal people. Of course there are deeper depths from there.
I'm no expert though, just encountered furries along with the anime convention crowd as part of a previous job. Again, it is the ones that go overboard that tend to make people go 'ewww' just like any fans of a certain thing that take it too far.

Yeah. I've known one furry, and he always considered it a cos-play fanfic thing and never a sexual one.
I still think it's weird, but hell, I find cosplay a bit strange too, not that I really care what other people do with their time and themselves.

Maybe you guys have known "normal" furries, but all the ones I knew were into it as a sexual thing. I find being attracted to wolves and foxes instead of people to be very strange.
