I know this might sound like a stupid question, but is it easy to tell things apart? All the videos of the game seem very dark, and with a small handheld screen I don't know if I will be able to tell apart all the brown/grayish stuff (fuck you modern gaming art style).

The music, the setting, the enemies - none of it seemed to have much of a connection to the rest of the series. Mirror of Fate looks like it's a little more in touch with the series' roots, but even if I had a 3DS I wouldn't be holding my breath in anticipation.

I'd rather see some another game with IGA at the helm.
I both agree and disagree with you. Lords of Shadow WAS definitely a departure, though I still liked it, but then - so was SotN when it came out. IGA definitely got a little megalomaniacal about Castlevania, it was around for years before he came around, with several solid titles, and he was just trying to excise many of them from the timeline to make his games be the only "canon" games as it were.

Not saying I didn't (and don't still) love playing them - I do. Still occasionally go back and play Symphony from time to time and love it every time. But I'm kinda glad to see some new takes on my favorite franchise, even if it does go in unexpected directions.
Gunning for a licensed NES NTSC-U set, follow the madness and poverty here!
Cheat sheet of my collection, always looking to increase it. 405/677 licensed games, 46/"95" unlicensed
Chronically out of date BST thread

I haven't had any trouble telling things apart at all. Everything in the game is clearly defined and distinquishable. My only complaint is one I usually have with 3DS games, if you slightly move the 3DS the 3D gets distorted which can be disorienting. You can always just turn the 3D off though

I just started Act III after a truly epic boss battle. I'm having a lot of fun

Man, what an awesome quick time event sequence I played through last night! Followed by an epic cut scene!

This game has some epic music during its big moments. There's some wonderfully creepy moments in the game too, like hearing the sound of chains and moaning as a ghost slowly drags himself across the background of your screen as you're walking through an area.

This game is totally Castlevania, just done with some modern elements borrowed from modern console games like the God of War series to freshen up its classic 2D gameplay.

I started playing this over the weekend. I was a little worried from some screenshots I saw, but after gamerforlife and stark both had such kind things about Mirror of Fate, I knew I should check it out sooner rather than later. And yup - it's a very enjoyable game, with some pretty tough enemies.

Being the Castlevania fan I am, I'm surprised I haven't bought this yet. I did get an on-campus job very recently, so looks like I'll be slaying the hordes of darkness later on this month.

Noise, how different is it from the other installments? I've heard mixed opinions about the game as a whole so far.

graphically it's reminiscent a bit of the PSP remake of Dracula X. But it plays so much better. There's a lot of cool platforming, climbing, etc. Lots of good combat techniques. It's pretty deep. I'm still early in, but I'd recommend it.

To me, it felt like a marriage of classic style Castlevania, God of War and post Symphony of the Night style Castlevania. I thoroughly enjoyed it..and I'm a picky, fickle gamer at times
