If you're gonna have a loose enough definition of RPG to include Zelda, I see no reason at all why ActRaiser should be left out

Opa, I've read plenty of "hidden numbers" arguments about the Zelda series and frankly that doesn't do it for me. Everyone who plays a Zelda game essentially plays it the same way; there's no player choice whatsoever beyond "I'm going to walk this way!" The progression is along the same pre-defined path. By those standards, Devil May Cry is more RPG than any Zelda game. Do the next 12 pages get better?

Looks to me like you have all of the NTSC-U rpgs on the list already, so I would say you are good. A suggestion: since you wish to include Link to the Past, I would also like to suggest Equinox. I did not see it on your list, though perhaps I missed it.

And if you want to delve into other genres with RPG elements, the hack-n-slash game King of Dragons serves as a precursor to Capcom's Dungeons and Dragons hack-n-slash games. It is worth a look at the very least.

I'm interested in how this little experiment will turn out. I love snes RPGs more then anything. Can't wait to read the results in two years. Haha

About starting with Draken... I bought it new when it came out. Started and stopped more times then I can count. About three years later I made myself beat it but man was it tough. Not the difficulty per se, more the what the hell should I be doing. Haven't touched it since. Game might be unplayable for me now.

Why don't you bring that argument to the appropriate thread.

Well, for his own edification, it's fine that LttP is on the list... But it prevents the list from being any sort of reference. It's not a particularly interesting conversation anyways.

I like the thread idea, but please let's just stop talking about Zelda.

BoneSnapDeez wrote:Nice list! I'm actually trying to collect all the games in English so this is a handy reference. Are you trying to track down physical copies or are you emulating?

I would include ActRaiser 1 & 2, you'll be missing out if you don't play them.

And yes, Drakkhen is an interesting game to start with.... Good luck.
I don't have a lot of these games so i will be emulating some. My brother works in the oil fields and will be emulating on his laptop.
Opa Opa wrote:ActRaiser 1 should be included. By managing and protecting your towns, the population increases; once the population increases to a certain set amount you'll level up.

So in a way Population = Experience.

ActRaiser 2 is just a sidescroller. No rpg elements from what I remember.

edit: and Zelda? It shouldn't be on the list but by this point I don't feel like reading the same argument again.

Moving on.
That is a good argument for ActRaiser. I might add it.

I will look into Equinox. I already decided against King Arthur but i will have another look.

I can take Zelda off this list in this thread if it will help you guys stay on track. But, its staying in my txt file :)

Moving on to Japanese games now.

I haven't decided to add every single game that has an excellent fan translation, or, just the really good games.

Also, for games that i have beaten in the past, i plan on patching JP games that have better fan translations then their official US counterparts, and playing these instead. For games i haven't beat i will just play the official game to experience it the way i would have back in the day.

Ok, so...

1992 - Dragon Quest V
1992 - Final Fantasy V
1992 - Shin Megami Tensei

1993 - Alcahest
1993 - Fushigi no Dungeon
1993 - Ys IV

1994 - Der Langrisser
1994 - Fire Emblem: Monshō no Nazo
1994 - Live A Live
1994 - Shin Megami II

1995 - Dragon Quest VI
1995 - Front Mission
1995 - Fushigi no Dungeon 2
1995 - Magic Knights Rayearth
1995 - Seiken Densetsu 3
1995 - Tales of Phantasia

1996 - Bahamut Lagoon
1996 - Lennus 2
1996 - Star Ocean
1996 - Treasure Hunter G
1996 - Treasure of Rudra

These all have translations, as do a few others, though I tried picking only the ones considered "important," including a few of Square's final offerings with Nintendo. I don't know if you have already composed your own list, but if not, here's a good place to start.
