Fat PS2: Actually unreliable, or just a myth?
Re: Fat PS2: Actually unreliable, or just a myth?
I've replaced 3 laser assemblies in slim PS2s and only 1 in a fat one if that means anything...
Re: Fat PS2: Actually unreliable, or just a myth?
I have a launch PS2 and i've taken major care of it! as time went on, it would refuse to read DVD movies and PS2 DVD games. but it still seems to read my PS1 library and and PS2 blue CDs perfectly.

You mean the 360.benderx wrote:Xbox was the most unreliable system for scratchings discs and red ringing most often after hearing numerous reports, that is why I never bought one.
The Xbox was actually very well built, despite it's tyrannosaurus size. That said I think the hardware production was outsourced, but MS themselves made the 360's ... lol.

Sorry, I meant 360. Too me the xbox is a fat brick to carry, just saying haha. The Xbox was actually very well built, despite it's tyrannosaurus size. That said I think the hardware production was outsourced, but MS themselves made the 360's ... lol.

It definitely was, lol. I lugged that thing around a lot for Halo LAN's...

Pretty much - at the very least the original used off-the-shelf parts, where the 360 is custom.Xeogred wrote: The Xbox was actually very well built, despite it's tyrannosaurus size. That said I think the hardware production was outsourced, but MS themselves made the 360's ... lol.
Personally I haven't had problems with my fat PS2, which was from maybe the first revision of the hardware. I worked at Software, Etc for the PS2 launch, however, and we did see quite a number of launch machines come back in due to disc read problems (usually CDs -or- DVDs, would usually read one type of media fine). A number of people also had issues with disc scratching if they put the machine vertical.

Own two PS2 Fats, no problems here either. I own an older model with the Firewire Port and the newer one without the Firewire. The mileage on the PS2 optical is limited to installing games, running the HDAdvance boot disc and the Action Replay disc. Sometimes a DVDR or CDR is installed when I convert a PAL disc to NTSC or apply a PPF patch. I have read that as a PS2 wears down, it will first have problems reading the CD versions of games.

After about 6 years of heavy playing my FAT console had some disc tray issues and the occasional trouble playing DVDs, but that was it. I was confident enough to replace it with another FAT console rather than a SLIM when it was acting up.

Re: Fat PS2: Actually unreliable, or just a myth?
I have had both fat and slim ps2's. I will go for a fat ps2 every time i have never had problems with the one i got. Useally if i get one that is disfunctional it turns out to be a dirty eye or the teeth have worn down that movethe lens back and forth on the gear rod. I have no love for the slim though due to no interior fan and the shoddy ass tray door that bends if a kid touches it.
