To be honest, if you want an OS that's simple and easy to use for general use applications, you really can't beat Ubuntu. It's seriously simple. I switched my mom's machine from Windows to Ubuntu a couple years ago (this is a woman who gets confused how to use different types of remote controls) and it was smooth as silk.
It's something I would suggest people start doing for their friends and families who "just want a machine that works". Ween them off the proprietary junk, it's just costing them time and money.
It's a crazy radical idea, I know ... but experience it for yourself, it's a much more intuitive system. They've purposefully made great strides to get it to that point.
And the added nonsense from pre-built distributors is absolutely appalling.
