Re: Are HD collections a scam?
Some ps2 games have built in 480p options. That makes a huge difference.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Pl ... HD_support
Then there are lots of games that can be forced to 480p with programs like GSM and HDTV Xploder. Some mod chips even have similar capabilities. Whenever hd remakes are compared to the (ps2) games they should in fact be compared to the ps2 game running in 480p. Hey hd remake, not so tough now are ya?
That said I do prefer a hd remake over an ps2 original, unless the hd remake is broken offcourse, then a hd remake is a total sham!
Come to think of it, I´ve never even played any ps2 or ps1 hd remakes, just arcade ports to hd.
Sony/Taito, please release hd remakes of ps2 Battle Gear 2 and Battle Gear 3. Those are my favorite ps2 games. Love ´em.

Re: Are HD collections a scam?
I don't see it as much of a big deal either. Do any of you guys against the idea honestly not own any other classic compilations? That's kind of how I see these, just with a few graphical updates and tweaks on the framerate, etc. Perfect Dark HD was glorious and I'm pretty excited to pickup a lot of these collections eventually. I'd dabbed into the MGS one and it looks really awesome. Playing PS2 era games on the PC (if they were on both), typically with better framerates and resolutions is always a nice experience to me, so if these HD re-releases are handled well I think it'll be fun replaying some games and discovering new series I missed out on (like a ton of the PS2 adventure games, I'm excited for the Sly Cooper, Jak, and Ratchet collections).
In a way, it's a bit silly because you can do these sort of things on the PC for free with mods and stuff, but still as long as they're packaging multiple games in releases that aren't the full $60, I don't think they're a bad idea.
Some can be awful though. Capcom's RE4 HD port looked completely worthless, same with the CV HD release. Then the Silent Hill HD collection was just completely butchered (see the thread about that one), etc. So yeah, it's good to do some research on them first and get opinions.
As for pre-PS2 generations, I think it'd just be simply too hard to update those, the outcome might be hilarious, etc. Some games could probably benefit from some smoothing or framerate boosts, but that's about it. They're just too dated and blocky (3D stuff like most of the N64 games), so sharpening them up would probably just look awkward.

there is no possible way that you meant this to be a serious statement. (?)RyaNtheSlayA wrote:Yup, re-releasing games for a new audience is totally a bad thing.

Re: Are HD collections a scam?
If you want to see what a PS1 "HD port" looks like, just play them on a decent PC with EPSXE and the openGL2 plugins. Some games look good, others are hilarious. But they wouldn't fly as a new release. They'd just have to be remade entirely. That's not bad, but it would cost as much as a new game. Pretty much defeats the purpose of the HD collection, which is cheap money. Isn't the Team Ico collection helping The Last Guardian? That's a big deal.
Someone said that PS2 games have aged horribly and I have to disagree. Obviously the 2D games still look great but lots of 3D games were really ahead of their time. What if there was a Tri-Ace HD collection? Star Ocean 3, Radiata Stories, and Valkyrie Profile 2. Imagine Valkyrie Profile 2 in HD for a second...Update the textures, clean up a few of the models, and you've got yourself a PS3 game. Here are some pics from the PCSX2 emulator.

And a video:
Please! Please take my money!
I don't think these are a scam, really. If I missed these games earlier and the upgrade is substantial, I'd rather have the collection than the original. If it costs a few more dollars and it looks like that I'll be happy to pay for it.

Of course not. I forgot to blue text/roll eyes afterwards.noiseredux wrote:there is no possible way that you meant this to be a serious statement. (?)RyaNtheSlayA wrote:Yup, re-releasing games for a new audience is totally a bad thing.
Older. Not wiser.
Re: Are HD collections a scam?
It was cheaper for me to buy the HD remake of SOTC then the original so it was well worth it for me. Metal Gear solid Remakes are worth it just for peace walker alone. I agree that some are a bit of a scam though

They do look better though. Why would I have replaced my copies of MGS 2 and 3 with the HD version otherwise? A scam? Really?

If they're a scam, it's a pretty good one because I still don't feel ripped off. I knew what I was getting before I bought it, and I'm satisfied.

At the end of the day, they must make money. Making games is a business after all. Some of that extra cash they are making goes into the development of new, original games.
Maybe Konami is using the Zone of the Enders re-release to gauge interest and fund a third game in the series. If that were so, I'll be one of the first gullible fans to line up and buy it.

Re: Are HD collections a scam?
I have no problem with these collections. I think they're pretty cool actually.
Keep in mind that retro collectors with 30 consoles are not the norm. There are tons of gamers who only own 2 or 3 current gen consoles and these ports are the only way they can physically play these games. Also, some of these collections include games that are just plain hard to find these days (ie: Ico).
