It's RPG Maker VX Ace, the latest version. I'm just using the built in graphics but I really love the aesthetics - chibi characters on maps, good detail in combat with a first-person view. I know the program has some restrictions, but I haven't found any that have really gotten in my way yet.
Thanks for the positive feedback thus far! I'm hoping to get a proper website up before too long.

My programmer inside is appalled at some of these opinions. :P
Java, hard to work with? What planet are you from!?

The game looks interesting. It'd be more enticing if the game looked like you were doing these things in the real world (in 90s jRPG style, of course) as opposed to a fantasy setting. Maybe you do, maybe you don't.

I hope it turns out well.

How is it restrictive? Yeah, you have the basic scripts that come with the package which seem very limiting, but you can also add your own/edit them and even find different ones for other types of battle systems and all kinds of other stuff online.

Don't know where the hate for RPGMaker is coming from. You can create fantastic indie games with that program (look at Amaranth Games for evidence).
Yeah, before I read the thread I was seriously wondering what exactly this was, I haven't messed with RPGM since the 2000 version or something. lol, looks like it's come a long way.

Cool idea.
And I especially admire that you are making your own music. Very cool.

The actual game would probably depress me though. It's easy to role play a fantasy hero, but when it comes to role-playing real world skills, I would be left feeling hopeless and inadequate.

I've never understood arguments like this. Yes it's made in RPG Maker, but what if it turns out being absolutely fantastic? It's like the people that claim they wont pay for a game because it uses Flash.
To be fair, Flash sucks. Isaac would've been so much better without the slowdown.

dont forget to make it funny and relevant.

It cant just be stats.

The story has to be good. Otherwise the mechanics of the game will turn people away.

Look for inspiration in others that have suffered through unemployment.

Here are some tips from me! Use them.

There needs to be a rival to your main character. A type of gary oak character. He gets good leads and is always one step ahead of your character. But Still just as unemployed as you.

There needs to be a love interest. She already has a job and its somthing that you want to do to impress her. Her Father is a powerful Boss and you're trying to get a job at his place to be close to her. But he is blacklisting you. And has made it close to impossible to find any work.

Temp agencies (aka clans) can help you level up and get EXP for those application battles. Their menial jobs are a short term sucess but you still need to find a better job.

You finally got an interview. But its a tournament battle over other potential appliants fighting over the postition. The final boss can be the owner of the business. He throws application questions as attacks. When you win you are demoted to LVL 1. You are hired but you lost all of your stats.

There needs to be some sort of joke/funny mini-game that involves filling out applications and another similar one that involves filling out the unemployment form. Aka unemployment checks. These unemployment checks are money to fuel your quest. Which are slowly running out.

There needs to be RPG cliches but given in a twist. Working with your idea there can be lots a pun and jokes. Those can make the players think "wow that totally happened to me!"

its a nice premise.

hope I helped.

I think I'm confused. It says CDs will not be for sale outside of conventions, but if I pledge $10 I'll receive a copy on the mail?

EDIT: I pledged $10.

Why would you make a comment like that? I don't think you know very much about programming.

flojocabron - I have some similar ideas implemented. There definitely will not be a love though interest because I'm making a point of having the protagonist be gender neutral.

Yep - through Kickstarter I think of it as a "reward" than as being for sale.
