Decide. Do you want a large collection or don't you? Decide on one path and stick with it even during those sometimes long periods when you feel like going the other way. You'll be much more content in the end.

Don't add to my problems by pretending my past views are still held in the present. I do not have any patience for that. Feel free to ask me what I think now.

The decision is already made for you. Collect for PS1/2/3 and PC, there's no way you'll ever run out of amazing titles to buy. Just keep it simple.

If you've done this 3 times and lost nearly $1000, I would say just stay away from collecting for sure, or at least attempt to keep it under control, financially. Chances are it's inevitable you're going to end up selling again, so when you buy, just try to be really stingy and only pick up stuff at a good price. And like others said, try to focus on specific things when building your library.

Yeah, I'm a notoriously cheap bastard when I go to yard sales and flea markets. If it's a little higher than I want to pay, I'll haggle; other than that, I just buy if the price is decent.

I know what your going through. I sold off my gamming collection for either to pay bills or xmas money because I never played the stuff and it was money just sitting there. I do regret it but I own a modded original xbox so I have all my retro and arcade games.
Now I am building my wii collection but I am doing it smart. I try to buy one game every month or have a 50.00 limit once a month. I then buy the game or games I know that I am going to play and spend time for. Thats what I would do. Or set aside a bank and drop all your change in the bank. At the end of each month roll it up and there is your money for games. This way here your not buying tons of games and not wasting your money and you can actually play through the game.

We all have been there,
many games in my collection Ive bought and sold/traded at least 4x over and always tell myself not to do it again. But never fails you find yourself not playing stuff collecting dust and then get all ocd cleanup time and get rid of it on the cheap.

After most of these cycles Im trying to keep a nice fun library of 20ish games per system, which I can have time to play and enjoy.I think most of us get in the mode where being part of a community like this we hear about alot of great games from other people and it gets us wanting stuff.Plus you have to admit spending when you dont have it on those good deals every now and again adds to the drama.

But I guess what Im trying to say, maybe keep a definitive idea of what you like and want play that way in the future you wont have to come to a decsion and lost when you have too much stuff and nothing to do with it or no longer wanting it.

So take some baby steps to rebuilding.. :)
If you can see the future while remembering the past, you may just have control of the present.

Lots of good suggestions in this thread. At least this morning, I feel like maybe I should resume getting Saturn and Genesis stuff, but only very slowly, and only if the deals good. Maybe focus more on my PS1 and 2 collections because there's a lot there that I think I'd like, and most of it is cheap and readily available.

Here's some advice. First, you'll get over the "regret". You really will. If you're in a vicious cycle, not buying will help break that cycle. Second, if you must get more games again, don't go for the expensive stuff, but rather the stuff you actually will play, and do it slowly. I mean, how often are you going to plop in PDS again? Finally, whenever you plan on selling again, STOP. I mean seriously, stop it. Give yourself time to really see if you don't play it. Six months isn't nearly enough. Hell, a year isn't enough time. I don't think any amount of time is really enough, since I and others I've known have wanted things they gave up at least a decade ago. You have to weigh the space you need with the items you aren't using. If there's the possibility of storing, there's nothing wrong with gathering dust. Then, you do begin to sell, when you're positive you no longer want certain games, then sell slowly, not all at once. I don't mean waiting a week, I mean carefully sorting out the games you really don't/won't want, and then seeing how it goes. Finally, and this is most important, right before you sell, play the games again, just to make sure you don't want them. Not only will you be able to evaluate better whether you want a game, you can succumb to the effects of nostalgia which will prevent you from selling (i.e. if you like the game enough). This also slows down you capability of selling, which as I noted already, is very important.

Take your time, think on it, sleep on it, question it, cross-examine it, support it, refute it, all before actually buying again. You'll be able to break this cycle.

Stick with your current setup. Why go through the trouble (and joy) of collecting if you'll likely sell it again? I'm sure your reasons for selling it off in the first place were just. You'll get over the regret, we all do :)
