Holy shit i'm not the only person who thought SoM's combat was clunky and kinda awkward?

Whew, I can always count on you, MrPopo!MrPopo wrote:It's ok, I'm still here to tell you how wrong you are. SoM's melee combat was clunky as hell. It was fixed with SD3. The magic system in SoM was much more usable, even if you weren't abusing chain casting.o.pwuaioc wrote:That's twice now we agreed on something. Hell has officially frozen over.Flake wrote:Wha!? Re: turn base rpg vs action rpg
Gotta be honest, it bugs me that two of the examples for action RPG were either turn based or in fact not RPGs at all. (Twilight Princess isn't an RPG and Mario RPG is a turn based game with some interaction when attacking)
Come on, there's Elder Scrolls, Zelda 2 (the ONLY Zelda RPG, the others don't have a single RPG trait. Getting new items and health doesn't make something an RPG, neither does questing), Borderlands (I'd argue it's more RPG than Mass Effect, to be honest), World of Warcraft, Radiata Stories, Odin Sphere ...
The only issue with Action-RPG is some of them, like Mass Effect, are barely an RPG at all, and they're more akin to a more complex action-adventure game than anything else. Most games are absorbing RPG elements making the raw RPG sort of disappear.
With that being said ... I like Turn Based usually. They're wildly different beasts, though. Most real-time RPGs are more about questing and building up your character than anything else, while most turn based RPGs are about the narrative and story you're experiencing.

Yeah, I noticed that as well and lol'd quite a bit.Cronozilla wrote:Gotta be honest, it bugs me that two of the examples for action RPG were either turn based or in fact not RPGs at all. (Twilight Princess isn't an RPG and Mario RPG is a turn based game with some interaction when attacking)
Anyway, to put in my 2 cents I'll say that I honestly don't know which I prefer. But I probably like FFXIII's combat better than both. Note I said probably, so even that isn't set in stone.

Re: turn base rpg vs action rpg
I prefer Turn Based but that is mostly because of how often my gaming sessions get interrupted. I like being able to put down the controller to do something for the GF and not come back dead or get the evil eye while I trudge out to a save spot.

Re: turn base rpg vs action rpg
I'd say I definitely prefer turned based or tactics rpgs over action rpgs. But that's not to say I can't sit down and enjoy a good action rpg. I've been enjoying the Ys games lately.

Re: turn base rpg vs action rpg
so is twighlight princess, and mario rpg not rpg's? so Im guessing twighlight princess is a rpg rip off, and is a fantasy 3d platformer, and mario rpg is a action rpg/rpg combo?MrEco wrote:Yeah, I noticed that as well and lol'd quite a bit.Cronozilla wrote:Gotta be honest, it bugs me that two of the examples for action RPG were either turn based or in fact not RPGs at all.
