One of the rumors about reselling games was that the buyer would only get a trial unless they purchased a code to unlock the full game. As far as rentals, I do not know, but used games would still be around. It would drive down the value of used games a bit. I am not complaining too much about it.. Not ideal but it could be worse.

Lets just see what happens in an official announcement.

It's sad that (according to the rumors) both Microsoft and Sony are trying to lock the used games... But it was obvious that they would try to do this. The video game industry need more and more money because it's an industry (they're goal is to make money sadly) and because their games cost much more to create than before. The DLC and this are just new ways to make more moneys...

I'm probably going to buy the WII U anyway or just give up on next generations of console. I don't want any new console anyway. The consoles (xbox 360 and PS3) are already powerful enough, their is not a lot of good Jrpg and these console are expensive...

It isn't just the idea that you can't play used games because they want more money.

It is the idea that rentals may no longer be an option. I can't count how many games I love now because I first rented it as a kid. Not everyone in the world can spend $50-60 dollars on a new game every few weeks.

It hurts the job market when places that rent video games and sell used games have to begin closing or shrinking their business.

The video game market has become a very toss-able industry. Once a lot of games run their course on the new shelf they do get harder to come by and it gets harder with each year that passes. So a game I missed three years ago I can't buy it when I stumble upon it used at a flea market or at a local store because I can't even play it.

You wouldn't be able to buy the new Street Fighter game and one weekend drive to your friends house to play it. How stupid is that?

And if it is tied to an online account those without internet couldn't even buy the games NEW.

This just fails hard on all accounts. I'm trying not to get too bent out of shape about it because there has been no official announcement but to me all of this would mean the end of the gaming industry. Yeah I use Steam and I know someday I will not be able to play these games but I've never once spent the full retail $60 on a game on Steam. I usually wait till a good sale comes and I don't think I've spent over $10 or $15.

Glad I have a good retro collection.

This shit pisses me off like nothing else. I was really looking forward to Diablo III but the always-on DRM killed it for me.

This shit pisses me off like nothing else. I was really looking forward to Diablo III but the always-on DRM killed it for me.

It's not always a matter of DRM though. Diablo III seems more like an online game you can solo than some of the past PC titles that required a connection, such as Assassin's Creed. They have logical reasons to do it beyond just making sure you're using a legit copy.

While there are people who lack internet in their homes, it is 2012, and hundreds of millions of devices have been sold whose primary function(s) rely on internet access. It's not that unrealistic an expectation.

This is making me want to just stop buying consoles after the PS3. The only way I would accept the "tying" to my console is if new games now cost, $30 - $40. Otherwise they can kiss my ass. Im not going to spend $60 or more for new games. And not knowing if im going to like it and then have it be totally worthless. I would probably look at the Wii U versus Xbox or PS4. Yeah i know this is only rumor so far. But we will see.

These stranglehold attempts at keeping gamers spending money makes me think that dsheinem's other thread about the death of consoles may actually come true.

I think the PC will be the place to be next gen. Casual gamers will play on android/iphone while enthusiasts will get their kicks on PC.

GOG just started selling new games DRM-free. As console gamers come to know the frustrations of DRM, the future could get interesting.

There are 2 possibilities that could occur if Sony and/or Microsoft go forward with their anti-used game strategies.

1. Nintendo releases a used game friendly console and blows away the other two consoles in sales.

2. It kills the gaming industry

Seriously though, isn't the gaming industry in rough enough shape as it is with the current recession and whatnot? I know game sales have been way down, and there's been a lot of game studios closing within the last year or so. And then Sony and/or Microsoft are thinking about taking a major risk with more anti-piracy measures?? I find that very hard to believe. But if they go through with it... then fuck 'em. I'm happy with all my older games, and I could put all my support into Nintendo next-gen if that's what it takes to teach those fat cats a lesson.
