What would you guys recommend as far as cleaning the lens without damaging it ?
As far as the correct region goes, I played the game once (same cd I am trying now) with the swap trick, so I think it is the right region. Would faulty media/ a bad image cause it to fail to load sometimes, then others start to load but then fail ?

the swap trick will also get past the region check as well...
what I would do to start is burn a direct copy of any legitimate game you own. And try getting that to work first before moving on to downloaded games you don't know where they have been.
When ever I test out new modchips I always use direct copies of games I own so I know for a fact any errors aren't caused by bad downloads/bad image.
Now the only indirect error can be linked to either the chip or a bad burn.
