Dust covers for NES games...Good Idea or not?

Thanks guys! To add to this thread. The Carts on the back say don't keep carts in extreme temparatures. Does that include keeping them in a heated room where I can turn the heater on and off?

It means don't leave your collection on top of the dash of a black car on a midsummer day.

Seriously, if the rooms heated you're fine, unless you like it 100+ degrees.

For the few NES carts I have I like having dust covers. I guess because it makes it feel slightly more complete and gives me some piece of mind. I've always collected complete copies but with the NES I decided to go with cart only.

I really like Atari published 2600 games. They all have that built in dust cover mechanism.

The dust covers look nice and offer protection for the cart labels as well. As long as they are store in a climate controlled room and not out in a storage shed then moisture trap is not a problem. I place the carts where the name label is not covered by the cover when viewed at an angle. NES labeled covers go to the more rare games except for the Miracle Piano cart which came with a black cover.

That is fine just don't set them next to the heater and you will be fine.

Heat should be fine, actually. It's moisture that causes corrosion.

I wouldn't go through the trouble to buy dust covers, but I did eventually get enough from buying games on Ebay and at swap meets.

I think about....half of my NES games have dust covers. Saw 15 of them last week at my local store and pounced on them. I don't think they're necessary, but they certainly are nice to have.

Like I said, the main benefits of them (to me) is creating a placeholder when I take a cart off the shelf and being able to hold the manual with the cart nicely. CRT also raised a good point about them cover most of the label, I guess they protect the labels against shelf wear, so that's another nice benefit. But as far as "protecting" the cart from dust, they're really not necessary. More of a collector's item then a necessity.

Do you still do the thing were you put the dust cover on the top of the cart when playing it? Thinking about that now, wouldn't that wear away at the label?
