I actually played some of the MGS series for the first time about a year ago. If you care to read, I pretty much blogged my experience here: http://www.racketboy.com/forum/viewtopi ... 44&t=28425

MGS2 was by far the worst one. It's just a night and day difference between 2 and the first and third. If you ever feel the desire to play a MGS solid game, and haven't played 3 yet, you must try MGS3 Subsistence. I'm so glad that I finally came around and tried it, it's such a great game. Years back, I had two different friends (on different occasions) explain to me why MGS3 is a such a great game. I ignored them, both times, because in my head I just didn't care about the MGS games and thought I never would. Now that I've played MGS3, I know what they're talking about. It might actually be one of my favorite games ever (although that list might be large).

Yeah, I'd tell anyone to play Subsistence, but not the regular version of MGS 3. That was my first experience with the game was the original release and not Subsistence. I hated the original so much, I almost threw the disc out. It was the game's amazing final act and ending that saved the experience for me. The game really goes out on a bang gameplaywise with some awesome bosses and action and has a very emotional ending as well

To be honest I think MGS2 probably has the best gameplay in the series. That one was loads of fun. Story is pretty La-Li-Lu-Le-Lo hilarious, but oh well!

I personally think the original game has aged wonderfully. Compare the voice acting to anything else on the PSX, and it's night and day. You can actually take MGS' seriously (nice to hear Hayter sound human too). And just yeah, one of my favorites that I revisit a lot.

I haven't been able to get into this series either. I bought MGS when it was new for PlayStation, but never felt compelled enough to play it beyond the first few minutes, so I finally sold it a couple years ago. Then, last year, my friend gave me MGS 2: Substance. Now I'm debating whether I want to try to get into this game, or just sell it too. The story for the series seems pretty interesting, but stealth games tend to stress me out.

Should play more than a few minutes to judge a game...

Never let the stealth aspect scare you away from MGS. That's the great thing about the series, play it on Easy/Normal and you can shoot the places up without effort. You really don't have to be stealthy unless you want too and play on the higher difficulties. No "Holy Christmas Fisher" game overs too if you're caught or anything!

I wasn't judging the game, just how high of a priority it was to play it versus the couple hundred other games I hadn't finished. I've come to a point in my life where I realized that I don't have time to do everything I would like to do, and therefore have to prioritize.

What I like about the Tenchu games is that being spotted isn't the end of the world. There are no fail states, no alarms or instant death. That series is really all about the player pushing himself out of self-motivation. You don't have to go unspotted to get through a level, but doing so gets you a better ranking, cool looking stealth kills, and unlocks cool secret items. The series doesn't push you or pressure you. It's your choice how stealthy you want to be, but you do get rewarded for making the effort, assuming you don't make the effort just out of sheer pride(if you're that type of gamer, i.e. me:)

For stealth alone (not counting cinematic graphics and involved story telling), I like Tenchu games better than MGS. You have more stealth options, you have cool stealth kills and there's a reason to be stealthy beyond just staying alive(unlike the MGS games)

and Tenchu came out in Feb of 98 in Japan and Aug of 98 in North America, predating MGS's September release date. So I get tired of hearing how MGS was the first real 3D stealth game.

I still need to check out the Tenchu games, maybe I'd dig them. The way you describe them also kind of sums up Thief... except in Thief, you never really have any real weapons so you -always- want to be in the shadows. But it's never "Holy Christmas Fisher!" game overs when you're caught. Is it obvious I hate stuff like that? Hehe... I definitely don't like trial and error stuff like Splinter Cell, egh.

As frustrating as Splinter Cell can be, I have to love those cheesy game-overs.

I'll admit I haven't touched the original game since it was new, and yeah I've never forgotten that line.
