HDD Mods on Fifth Generation Consoles.
Re: HDD Mods on Fifth Generation Consoles.
There already is a SD card reader for the Dreamcast on the market. Some game work much better then others but a lot of games don't work at all yet.

Cool I've been waiting something like PSIO. I hope its available ps1or2or3. Someday there might not be blank-cdrs anymore in near future.

The existing one uses the serial port which is not that fast. HDD replacement would have a faster bus to utilize.

I would buy that in a heart beat!neilencio wrote:Some one posted about some prototyping some one an SD card attached to an FPGA, which itself is attached to the Dreamcast motherboard while emulating a GD rom drive.

Though the consoles that I would most like to see with an HDD is the Saturn. Since it's so hard to actually play anything on that system because the games are so hard to find and expansive. Emulation isn't very good either, there's SSF, which works well for the most part, but even that is not ideal.

For consoles that use optical drives, being able to boot games from a hard drive, memory card or other medium is a huge must in my book. Hopefully some day we'll have worthy examples of devices like this for all of our mainstream retro consoles.
I can not agree more! Whenever I hear that a system that I like (especially older systems) has an HDD mod I always jump on it immediately.

I have been trying to find one of those GameCube HDD loader devices since they launched. There was a phenomenally low number released, and they have stopped making them.

I found out that the Saturn actually had a port for HD's (look inside the battery holder slot).
But there's no homebrew out there that makes use of it

Are you sure that that could be used for HDD? cool.
Perhaps there aren´t any modding/programming geniuses that have love for the Saturn?

You can use a WiiKey Fusion (mod chip designed for the Wii) on a Gamecube, which will allow you to boot games from an SD card. Not exactly a hard drive, but it's better than nothing. Though I don't know how much hacking is required to get it to work, I only watched a short video clip of it functioning. That being said, I wonder if any one ever attempted to get the Wii Wode working on the Cube.

This can be done via soft modding as well. It's called DIOS MIOS lite.

But that's softmodding a Wii... I'm saying, you can use the WiiKey Fusion on a Gamecube.
