This would signal the likely end of GameStop and GameFly...and the likely end of me ever buying another microsoft console.

Game Stop might be causing more harm than good to video games, and Game Fly is just perpetuating this throw away society we live in. "If you're a gamer, you need Game Fly!" But I don't see them going anywhere any time soon.

If they figure out how to construct the system to not play used games then they are basically shooting them self in the foot cause most consumers are buying used games if they have a low income or have multiple kids rather then spending 50-60 on a new game the kids don't like i can't see me spending money on that type of system as for game fly they don't carry retro stock so i don't have any need for them

One word "retarded".
Re: Rumour: The next Xbox won't play used games
Perhaps each game will have a unique key that can only be used once and must be activated with a Steam-like service. I probably would not buy that console...

If Microsoft wants to do this, let them. Anything that could help diversify the market would be nice.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

The move is slowly happening. Seeing as Nintendo is stubborn and always behind, we have at least a gen or two beyond Wii U that they will still be keeping games "the good way". Seeing this, either its all download or DRM, and will keep retro gamers/smart people from buying it, while the lemmings die.
Good thing I got into retro gaming when I did...

Are we forgetting that Sony said they were going to do something like this with the PS2 and then the PS3? The thing about going to a digital distribution platform is you have to stay competitive. Simply going "you have no choice, we're going to charge whatever the fuck we want" means you get terrible sales. It didn't work for Sony with the PSPGO and it's not working for EA with Origin (although the latter may have something to do with their AWFUL customer support, disgusting client and privacy concerns).
Wouldn't make a jot of difference to me, mind. I don't buy used games for current consoles because I want money grubbing shits like Gamestation and Game to go out of business. I don't sell my games either. I have a Steam library with 230 games in it, I can't sell that either. Doesn't bother me one iota.
If the games are to be the same price as they are today and still dropped in price like they do, I fail to see how this will affect me at all. If they make it 100% digital distribution they would either have to follow Steam's pricing model or they will fail. It's as simple as that.
Besides, buying used games is identical to piracy anyway...
