As per the notes in my power post, only use the AC brick with a US NES (either model). You can use various DC bricks from 5-9 volts fine on a US NES because there is another transformer inside that steps it down to 5 volts anyway.

The only danger is using the AC brick on a device expecting DC. A DC brick won't hurt a NES.

this is why i have a av famicom, none of this bullshit.

nintendo really annoyed people with the damn adapters on the nes/snes systems.

i really do believe the most valuable resource for a collector is the right fucking adapter.

snes especially./rant

The reason we have the screwy SNES brick is because of the weirdo AC adapter on the NES. If they hadn't made the shape different, people would have just tried to use the NES AC brick and blown up their new SNES. Some people probably killed their Genesis with a NES brick.

I don't have a top loader, but since it uses the same brick, I imagine it will be fine. But I'd google or wait for someone to chime in.

This topic seems relevant enough for a couple of my questions.

I am interested in importing a famicom, and I was wondering about the power cord. I want to keep the cost down if I can, and getting one without RF (I have one already) or power cord seems to be a good way to do that. From this topic, it sounds like I could use my SNES power cord no problem? Am I right with this?

I am also interested in importing a Japanese N64, and I have a power cord for a US N64. Would it be fine to just use that?

And as a general question, I have heard that it's fine to just plug Japanese systems into the wall in the US. Is that true?

* A US SNES power cord will not work on a famicom. The power output is correct, but the physical shape differs. A Sega Genesis model 1 supply offers suitable output for Famicom/Super Famicom.

* US N64 Power Supply will work on a Japanese system just fine

* Yes, you can use Japanese power supplies in US outlets, but since they are expecting 100v and getting 120 +/- from the US outlet the system voltage regulators will work slightly harder (expelling the waste energy as some extra heat). This is minimal and shouldn't be of much concern. I prefer the Genesis 1 adapter for Famicom systems, however to make their lives easier.

I'm guessing this has been satisfactorily settled, but to confirm: yes, you can use a Genesis 1 (DC out) or NES (AC out) power supply on both the toaster & top loader systems. The reason this is safe is because the NES converts the AC to DC inside the system itself (rather than in the adapter).

The NES circuitry only allows current to flow in one direction, so it doesn't matter whether it's blocking out half of the AC waveform (with the system circuitry) or passing DC after it's already been "rectified" earlier in the adapter.

The vast majority of consoles do not have internal AC to DC rectification, however, so the NES-specific adapter should not be used on any other system (generally speaking).

I'll keep on using the Genesis 1 plug then.

Side question, I have an adapter that is perfect for the Genesis 1 but the polarity is wrong, what can I do?

Either build a short adapter with a socked and plug that reverses it or snip and splice.
