Just raiden 4 the bullets are too fast and small ive been loving raiden fighters aces that games perfect. Am i doing something wrong the ship in raiden 4 moves like molassus and i dont think their are any speed powerups. I like shmups with fast and nimble ships i find that essential over firepower

Oh lord. I'd love R-Type and R-Type II so much more if I didn't have to return to an earlier part (and sometimes the beginning) of the level with none of my ship powerups. I don't even get to keep my speed dammit.ExedExes wrote:Dying, of course, and when the following occurs after that

Eh, Raiden 4 is not anything like the original raiden games or the fighters series. They were developed by Moss, not Seibu.ninjainspandex wrote:Just raiden 4 the bullets are too fast and small ive been loving raiden fighters aces that games perfect. I thought you were talking about dificulty to see on the background, not speed. Raiden 4 has fast bullets, the only way to get better is to play it so much that you know where the bullets are going to be.
Have you tried it on arcade? Ive never made it past st3

i dont mind fast bullets its just slow controls coupled with bullets that are hard to see against a 3d background make for a unpleasent shmupdunpeal2064 wrote:Eh, Raiden 4 is not anything like the original raiden games or the fighters series. Re: shmup gaming pet peeves
You should stick with the Fighters series anyways. Those are brilliant games.
Then you can pick your own speed. I prefer slower ships personally, as I tap-dodge constantly.
Another problem I have sometimes is boss milking. Raizing did it right, but in some games its just too much.
Raiden 4 has this. Hiding from the boss and charge shotting him with homing is just boring imo.

Not being able to see bullets in Raiden? WHUT
I can say from enjoying them in the arcades for years, including the rare D/X variant, that is the least of your problems -- and Raiden Fighters has one heck of a nice hitbox, at least on the Judge Spear
I thought of Super R-Type on the SNES when I mentioned that. REALLY bad for thatRyaNtheSlayA wrote:Oh lord. I'm going to disagree on this. I would rather start at the beginning of the stage if powerups are involved. So many times it's difficult to progress if you lose your powerups. I'm finding R-Type DX to be very frustrating in this regard, although it relies on powerups much less than, say, Gradius.ExedExes wrote:Dying, of course, and when the following occurs after that

Re: shmup gaming pet peeves
I was thinking of R-Type when I posted that. A game like that, you need a good powerup and a powered-up Force Unit at all times. Relentless difficulty, but still a heck of a good challenge.o.pwuaioc wrote:I'm going to disagree on this. I would rather start at the beginning of the stage if powerups are involved. Gradius had a checkpoint system, and it was a good fit for that game, to re-build powerups.

Re: shmup gaming pet peeves
I'm developing a shmup for pc, in an 8-bit style, so this is good readin' =D So far I think I've avoided most of the major shmup pet peeves.
I have the player respawning from the left edge of the screen after dying, ala Lifeforce. But as you guys pointed out, where you spawn has a lot to do with powerups....which I haven't gotten to yet, but good to keep in mind.
I'll have to remember not to overdo the speed powerups as well.

Being able to adjust your ship's speed between 2 or 3 levels at any time, including while paused is mo bettah.Archendrus wrote:I'll have to remember not to overdo the speed powerups as well.
