New Nights getting some static

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

Agreed. Even at the time I failed to see why the game was praised so much. Dont get me wrong it was good but not as good as everyone made it out to be.

As for the no show of motion controls, I'm sure I read somewhere that Sega were going to implemement various control schemes including motion controls.

I still think it is a wonderful game and probably one of my Top 10 of all time, but I can see where these statements are coming from. I think a lot of the praise came from the fact that it went above and beyond while making up for the lack of a true Sonic game on the Saturn. But I think the biggest plus for me is the interpretation of the dream world. Gameplay-wise, no it's not groundbreaking. But I love the visuals and the theme in addition to a simple game that I don't get overwhelmed by.

personally I liked it as at the time of impending doom Sega still had the balls (or gall) to release something of a new genre, it was like many other but at the same time not. Even tho it was nothing about flighing I think it captured the grace of a bird, nights floated spund and glided about with fluid ease, coupled with a truly jap high score driven replay factor. It was good for the hardcore but then christmas nights came out and then loads of people got a taste, but thoes with the game got more with the ability to explore your nightopeans (originaly a much hyped mechanic). I think people forget that at the time everything was about 3d graphics, people had forgot that games where ment to be fun (reviewers and gamers more than the makers) it was psx transparency this, saturn poor hash transparency, psx nice cgi, saturn slightly ropey cgi..... the games where no less fun for the most part on the saturn but it took a hammering in the press, Sega came out with some highly original games in the face of stiff competition and I suppose thoes of us that wanted it to suceed grabed at any true great games with both hands and would defend them to their death. The psx has some great great games, but as the sucessor with a market that could tolerate poor sales more somehow the unique titles on the saturn seem that much more rememberable.... well to a pissed old nostalgic like me anyhow. I say keep it original, I will cry if nights starts popping some b boy moves or some other crap to make it modern, I also would prefer no motion control if they have to force it in. keep it fun and natural and fluid, if they do that then I think they are fair to the original.

I kind of sound as if I didnt like the game :!:

I loved the experience while it lasted. Like some of you guys have mentioned if captured that dream like, flying feeling fell. The whole gameworld, music (loved that tune) everything was great.

Its just that after I completed it there wasnt much else (apart from replaying it and messing around with those nightopians). I just didnt see the appeal of getting higher chain links etc once you have A ranks on all levels.

But accept that I'm defo in the minority here! And it's great that Sega is releasing a new Nights game.

Really? I don't even really think of Kirby's world as being anything like dreams.

NiGHTS is kinda like an art film. Lots of people won't like it, but those who do love it. It wasn't trying to be the same kind of experience as Tomb Raider or Street Fighter Alpha. It was trying to be something else. By focusing on simple gameplay and a unifying artistic vision I think it managed to transcend being simply the sum of its parts. It's a very gestalt game that way.

But yes, the combination of the use of colors, the style of graphics, the music, the gameplay, and the scoring system resulted in what I still consider to be one of the best games ever created. Not best as in popular, best as in art. NiGHTS is like classical music, IMO.

most of my dreams end up being like GTAIII or any of the vivid interactive games for 3DO.

heh well it must have taken me alot longer to get straight A's lol, as it was no walk in the park for me so I got a fair bit of replay out of it (ie i sucked hardcore), not like virtua cop.... now that I was adicted to in a high score capacity 99999999 baby yehh :) .
