Re: Anyone playing DC Universe?
not a fan of DC really, but noticed this was free on PSN so figured I'd download it to give it a shot. I'm one of those guys who will generally download any free game on PSN since it's... y'know, free.

havent played for a few days. I started Skyrim which is pretty cool, but I'm cheating through it on PC.
I just can't be arsed to sit there and grind, so I'm playing in Godmode and NoClip mode, and I have like a zillion gold, and I just unlock anything with the unlock command.
But I've killed like 5 dragons so far, which is cool. I'll get back on DCUo soon enough.

You call it free, but these types of games are actually the most expensive out there.noiseredux wrote:not a fan of DC really, but noticed this was free on PSN so figured I'd download it to give it a shot. Re: Anyone playing DC Universe?
um. It was free to download. Free to play. And I don't play to spend any money to add anything to it. So it's free. Not sure how free = expensive.Inazuma wrote:You call it free, but these types of games are actually the most expensive out there.noiseredux wrote:not a fan of DC really, but noticed this was free on PSN so figured I'd download it to give it a shot. They aren't actually free. A portion of the game is free, and another portion costs real money. If you run the numbers and compare to the monthly fee business model, the "free to play" model ends up costing the player more money.
That's why every MMO is like this now. People hear that it's free so they go and check it out. Later on, they find out that they need to spend real money on some things, and since they have been playing and enjoying the game for a while, they are fine with it. The MMO company ends up making more money overall this way.
There are two problems with this. The obvious one is that the game costs more money. But that's not nearly as bad as the other problem.
Spending real money is the most important thing in these games. Actual player skill or how much time you spend on the game are not as important as spending real money. These games are purposely designed around encouraging players to spend money. You can do your best to play the game and not spend any real money, but you will always be weak compared to someone who spends real money. You can't possible compete with that.
And even if you could obtain the same things as a paying player, it would take you many hundreds of hours to do it. Would you rather grind for 100 hours to obtain a strong sword, or just spend $5 and get it right away?
So because of this "pay to win" business model, the game is completely destroyed. Instead of actually playing the game, you are better off working overtime at your job.
In other words, when you are playing a game like this, you are forced to choose one of the following:
- Spend very little or no real money on the game, and be very weak and horrible at it.
Or
- Spend a ton of real money on the game, and be very strong and good at it.
Both of these choices are terrible. That's why I hate this business model so much and really wish people would stop supporting this bullshit.

Re: Anyone playing DC Universe?
so you admit that to those of us who opt not to spend any extra money, it is indeed free. Therefore, not expensive at all.
Re: Anyone playing DC Universe?
You don't have to spend real money, but the game is not free since some things do cost real money. It's free to go to a supermarket and walk around, but if you want an apple, you have to pay for it. If you choose not to buy the apple, that doesn't make it free.noiseredux wrote:so you admit that to those of us who opt not to spend any extra money, it is indeed free. The problem with this is that you aren't getting the full game. Also, you will be weak and shitty compared to the players who spend real money.
If you don't mind missing out on some things and being shit at the game, good for you. That's stuff really bothers me, so there is no way I could tolerate that.
Calling the game "free to play" is technically correct. You can indeed play for free. But since you can't get 100% of the game for free, no one can say "this game is free". "Free to play" is a marketing term that tricks players into thinking the game is actually free.

Re: Anyone playing DC Universe?
you're on the right track, but your analogy is off. This is like you go to a supermarket and they say "one apple is free, but a bushel will cost you money." And I'm like "oh that's cool, I was only looking for a single apple anyway." So my apple that I got was free. It wasn't expensive. At all. Just free.Inazuma wrote:You don't have to spend real money, but the game is not free since some things do cost real money.
