Bingo.

It's still bogus and sucks, Valve gets a spanking, etc. But our information wasn't stored in plain freaking text.

Still, Valve has taken about as long as Sony to publicly declare the compromised information, doing so six days after the first signs of trouble. PlayStation Network was taken offline April 20; after an investigation, Sony announced April 26 that personal information, potentially credit card numbers, were exposed.

Sunday saw a defacement of the Steam Forums blamed on the hacking website Fkn0wned.com (it has not taken responsibility). After an investigation, Valve announced today that personal information, potentially credit card numbers, were exposed....

But (compared to Sony) in this case, it's more likely that the number of Steam accounts compromised is closer to the number of credit card accounts exposed, though it's unknown whether the compromised database was a comprehensive accounting of the Steam installation base, or only a portion of it.
Also, I don't know that whatever encryption they have on their credit card database would be sufficient to stop the people who I am sure had to crack encryption to get into the database in the first place...

Also, I seem to recall the forums on Steam being hacked this past summer...right? If so it seems that they haven't made fixes they needed to.

That's silly, fixing a previous hack attempt doesn't mean you are invulnerable. After all this very forum gets a very unhealthy amount of spambots and I doubt you can blame anyone for that other than the spambots.

Encryption breaks. It happens. But it's better than having it in plain text, and no one can fault Valve for that.

Very little is invulnerable. It's a non-stop amount of work keeping hackers out. The point was, at least for me, that Sony looked as if they didn't even try.
