Hey guys, I'm buying a Commodore 64!
Re: Hey guys, I'm buying a Commodore 64!
Sigh, the Commodore 64 makes me so sad as it is my number one life regret...I had one, had gotten it for free, with a garbage bag full of floppies. Had literally every damn game released on the system, I've gone through "lists of best Commodore" games and what have you, checked each game with "yep, have that, yep have that..."
And then one day when I hadn't played with it for upwards of a year I got rid of it. Donated it and all the games to the Salvation Army. This was over a decade ago, now, but damned if I don't feel like a moron for having done it.

It's taken me awhile to get through testing all the cassettes i got with my c64 lot i bought some months ago but here are the titles that kept me going back.
Dominator a rather fun but difficult shump and it has an awesome loading soundtrack which really gets you in the mood to play.
Dragon's Lair II yeah i know Dragon's Lair has a somewhat tarnished reputation when it comes to ports of it. However the sequel on the C64 is surprisingly fun sure it's still easy to die but it seems like it has been scaled back in difficulty just enough so instead of quitting out of frustration it makes you want to try again.
Captured if you like your platformers unfair much like I wanna be the guy then why not play one that is genuinely from the 80's not just a bad imitation. Every screen you encounter is going to get you at least once.
Creatures However if you like fun platformers check out Creatures.
Then there are the arcade ports not all of them are good but the ones that are really shine. Here are few that i can recommend
Commando
Ye Ar Kung Fu
Kung Fu Master (kung fu/spartan x on the nes)
Also while it may sound inefficient to use the tape loader to play games i've found that i've spent more time on a game after having waited so long for them to load.
And for me to play the same game again means it's good enough to be worth the 3-5 minutes it takes to load and for a game to be worth that commitment means it's good.

Good for you. I've always wanted one, never made the jump though.Ryan wrote:Hey guys, I'm buying a Commodore 64!

I got my unit, it's beautiful, unfortunately I have to return it. The sound doesn't work, and I'm not really interested in opening it up and attempting to fix it. I'm terrible at soldering etc, and I just don't have the confidence to fix it.

Well that sucks. I hope the person has it looked at. It might just be that there is chip creep and they need to be pushed back in or cleaned and reseated.

I don't know, video works perfectly fine and is sharp, carts load up fine and so does BASIC, but no sound. It's made even worse by the fact that the thing is extremely clean and not yellowed at all. It even came in the original box.Hobie-wan wrote:Well that sucks. I hope the person has it looked at. I'd love to get it to work, I just don't think I can do it.

Are you using RF or the composite or s-video rca cable?

I tried both composite and RF and neither gave me sound. I opened up the C64 and other than being pretty dusty nothing stands out.Hobie-wan wrote:Are you using RF or the composite or s-video rca cable?

So the fuse is fine, and the SID is in there, but I've also read that faulty power supplies can cause it too (and I have the crappy PSU). If anybody has the newer style PSU they would let me borrow to test I would be very appreciative.
