Wow. This is pretty embarrassing. This company is an ATM supplier, but they call it ATM machine all over their website. The URL itself and even their fucking motto get it wrong. (>_<);;
I just sent them a polite email, letting them know about their mistake. I used my real email address so hopefully they reply to it.
Two wrongs may not make a right, but one million wrongs do make a right. When poor English is widespread enough, it stops being incorrect.

Oh look. There is a wiki page on this subject. It's called RAS syndrome, lol.

Re: Redundant usage of abbreviations (>_<)
I wonder if we're wrong about this. For example, Danver's Restaurant can still be Danver's Restaurant restaurant. PIN and ATM could be reconstrued as "Personal Identification Number number" and "Automated Teller Machine machine" with the apparent redundancy negated by name and then what type of thing it is. They're not, as far as I know, proper names properly, but they might still be construed as verbal wholes.
Not to say that those who say ATM machine and PIN number are thinking of in this way, but it's possible when you step back and look at the language as a whole.

Whatever the situation, if it is actually correct to have redundant words, then it's correct. I have no problem with that.o.pwuaioc wrote:I wonder if we're wrong about this. My girlfriend works for a company named Lands' End atm, and they actually have a template email to reply to anyone who sends them a message to tell them that their apostrophe is in the wrong place. I wonder if you'll get one of those back?Inazuma wrote:http://www.daltonsatm.com/atmmachines.html

I wish I could find the relevant article, but this is actually a feature of language. The abbreviations have taken on a meaning independent of what they abbreviate. Frequently people will know what the object an abbreviation is for better than they know the abbreviation.

I'm okay with that one because LED stands for other abbreviations too, like company names, etc.Ziggy587 wrote:Ah, I definitely remember talking about this very thing in some random thread. I think Niode brought it up.
