But there's no actual proof of that - nobody has a surviving CIB NES-101 with a AV Output. There are a couple examples of the system only surfacing, but nothing that would indicate that old stock AV out NES-101s were ever sold.

Wow, that's very interesting. It's so cool that there are all these stories about what exactly happened back in the day but no real way to 'prove' anything, we just have to rely on stories and memories. Like folklore passed down from one generation to the next.

I second the endorsement of the Famicom AV. The picture quality is great, and the 'dogbone' controller is very comfortable. The only trouble is the controller cable length, only 3 feet >.<

Yes. Outside of the production code and pcb revisions, the NES Dogbone controller is identical to the AV Famicom's controller, only you get a six foot cord instead of a 3 foot cord.

That said, if you're looking for a NES dogbone controller, be careful on ebay - most of the ones you'll see are very crappy knock offs.

Another solution is to buy an AV Famicom and plug the North American NES 4-Score adapter into it and then the 3 foot AV Famicom controller into that. Doing this will give you a longer cord and the ability to select on the fly turbo A or turbo B!

Dog Bone knock offs can be usually spotted by their lack of a nintendo logo on the face of the controller and the blank space on the back of the controller where there would usually be legal/model info.

sort of, but there are ways of hacking composite video out of a toploader to remove the vertical lines that are just as good as toaster composite, so it's no big deal.
