Re: Sega CD Questions

I'm almost done, just trying to get the thing to work. It's playing legitimate discs, but trying to run a CD-R with Shining Force CD on it so I can test the battery in it, to see if I can make do with it until I can afford to buy the backup RAM cart. It freezes at the SEGA logo after playing the music, any ideas?

I can post a pic once I have everything setup no prob. Friday is my day off of work so I'll tinker with it and get everything setup. I do want to try to find a 32X sometime just so my Genesis/Sega CD combo looks more like a transformer, lol. Mine are model 2s though so they aren't as bulky. Still longer or as long as my 360/PS3 I think though.

EDIT: I'm having an issue with my burned ISOs. I read that you want to do the .bin and .cue burns so it'll work properly. I've tried with a couple games, only Dark Wizard is working. The Working Designs games (Lunar and Popful Mail) load to the Working Designs logo then cut to black, not sure what the issue is, I'll mess with it more tomorrow after work.

Also, can anyone tell me what the light on the Sega CD is meant to indicate? I noticed sometimes it stays on red, other times it blinks, and in both instances with the Working Designs games, once they faded to black and stayed on the black, the light just stayed off.

I believe that the light is to indicate if the drive is currently reading. Don't open the drive when it's on.

Have you formatted the memory through the system menu? I can't think of WHY it might be necessary, but it can't hurt.
I know the Sega CD manual says it needs to be formatted after a month of not being turned on and then has to be left powered-on for six hours, presumably to recharge a battery. I don't think I've ever lost a save game though, even after not turning the system on for a year.

Try cleaning the laser lens. You can use one of those discs, or if you're very very careful put a little bit of alcohol on a q-tip and gently brush it over the lens. If you have canned air blow it out. If you have a model 1, you can take it apart and do this, but it may just be easier to use the disc.

If you're burning the games correctly, they should play just fine, however; it is slightly harder on a lens to play burns vs pressed discs because the burns are not perfect. The pits are not quite as regular.

I've never heard of formatting it and leaving it on for 6 hours thats interesting.

Someone on another forum I frequent suggested burning the gamess at a slower disc speed. I'm going to try that when I get home.

I'm excited though, I won an auction today on EBay for the game Vay. Suppose to be mostly complete (minus map) and in perfect condition, only $34 after shipping. My Sega CD collection is well under way, lol.

Anyone know of a third party Backup RAM cart you can buy that's legit? The only ones I'm finding for sale are the originals, and they're expensive.

I've never seen the need to get a memory cart yet. However; I would get an original, only because in video gaming time and time again 3rd party memory has proven to be unreliable.

You should be burning at a low speed, and that can make a difference. Try burning around 8x. Also use ImgBurn if you aren't already.

You only need that cord if you want stereo sound from your Sega CD games, and you have a model 1 Genesis. The model 1 Genesis AV cables are mono-only, so you'll need the connector cord (basically a double-ended headphone cord) running between the two. The sound then comes out of the two sound jacks on the back of the SCD.

Another way to accomplish stereo with a model 1 Genesis and an SCD is to buy a headphone jack to RCA cable, and so you run the sound to your TV from the headphone jack on the front of the model 1 Genesis. This is actually the superior solution, as it makes regular Genesis games stereo as well as SCD games, whereas the connector cable only gets you stereo for SCD stuff.
Is there a certain type of connector cable you need for the model one, what is a good price for one. Is this a good price, if it stays at the price.

How do you hook up a Model 2 Genesis and Model 2 CD. Do I need to hookup the rca cables from the CD unit itself to the tv for sound or just the Model 2 Genesis if it is using a stereo/video cable?

Just the Gen cable.
