Might not work. Maybe try VGA input to Component output? It still may not work but at least the signal stays analog, a better chance. Really, click my CRT vs LCD signature link to answer all this stuff.Fahrenheit wrote:My mistake I read right over that. I'm just gonna go in on this tv but ill try a different converter box. Maybe ill try this one http://www.monoprice.com/products/produ ... 1&format=2.

Re: Best CRT for retro gaming?
The TV the VGA to HDMI box was working on was my Samsung Plasma. CRTGamer could not get the game to work on his HDCRT. I believe this is due to the fact the Dreamcast outputs a 640x480 resolution signal. Although the VGA to HDMI converter is compatible with 640x480, many HDTVs are not compatible, meaning they simply will not display a 640x480 resolution picture through certain ports. I would think that would be more likely when using the DVI port, since DVI on those TVs it meant specifically for HD resolutions, and 640x480 is not HD.
I just wanted to point out that some retro games are in WS, such as Virtua Fighter on 32x, NiGHTS, and DK64 and therefore would benefit from an SD WS CRT. In my opinion one should be sure to have the original remote so they can display 4:3 games pillar boxed on the WS TV, preserving the games original aspect ratio. In my view the only compromise one makes here is they have less 4:3 area than an equivalent sized 4:3 TV. Meaning a 32in WS TV has less 4:3 area than a 32in. Full Screen TV.
I understand many people would rather the image fill the screen, then be displayed in its proper aspect ratio. I whole hardheartedly disagree with this opinion. If a 4:3 image is displayed on a 16:9 TV it should be pillarboxed to preserve the original aspect ratio. If a Widescreen or SuperWide movies is displayed on a 4:3 screen it should be letterboxed to preserve the original aspect ratio. However, I understand some people would rather fill the screen.Widescreen stretch problem
I have a HD CRT WEGA, a Sony KV32HS500 with a 4:3 screen. The perfect TV for older 4:3 screen 480i consoles as well as newer Component and HDMI systems. A compromise of watching widescreen movies on a square TV though. I prefer a full screen so I always try to get the anamorphic versions of movies, filling up the entire screen. But if I had a widescreen, I think I would prefer to utilize all the estate of a screen, stretching a 4:3 screen of a non widescreen game. For me a better route then the black bars on the sides.

That reminds me, there's this handy site that's incredibly useful for retro gamers and whatnot when shopping for tvs.Jamisonia wrote: I just wanted to point out that some retro games are in WS, such as Virtua Fighter on 32x, NiGHTS, and DK64 and therefore would benefit from an SD WS CRT. It lets you compare screen sizes in different aspect ratios, telling you how much more screen area you can expect to get in different aspect ratios and stuff.

I have a Sony KV-34XBR960. It sucks ass for retro games. Hate it. It works fine for anything Dreamcast and up. For retro games, SDTV CRTs are the only choice. I find the tubes made by Toshiba 30" and under are the best. You know you're getting a good Toshiba tube in that size if it has component video inputs in the back. Sorry, no 480p.

Well the price was too good to pass up. Looks great so far but only had Dreamcast into it with Svideo. I got a VGA to Component trans-coder coming today. See how this bad boy looks in 480P (if it works)

Great looking WEGA, 4:3 HD CRTs are rare. The memory slot only supports the older non pro mem sticks up to 256mb. No big deal, pics can be viewed with a CDR or USB enabled DVD player. Try the Component input with a DVD player or PS2 with games set to 480p.Fahrenheit wrote:Well the price was too good to pass up. Looks great so far but only had Dreamcast into it with Svideo. Curious about the VGA to Component transcoder, please post with screenshot pics.

Re: Best CRT for retro gaming?
Ok so I got this today http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6812156028 and it works kinda. On 720p and 1080i modes it turns it into a 16:9 and fills the screen right to left but leaves black bars top and bottom. On 480P mode (which is what I want) the image is off set to the left about 3 inches but other then that it works. I wounder if a higher quality trans-coder will fix the problem? Thinking of trying http://www.ramelectronics.net/audio-vid ... d9A60.html which seems like a better all around product.
Re: Best CRT for retro gaming?
I just ordered that same converter box. Should be here on Thursday, so I'll see what I think of it.
For what its worth, I've had my DC hooked up to a variety of monitors using the vga box straight. Each one behaved differently, (some of the them stretched the image on their own) but the most common element on any 16:9 monitor was that the image was offset a bit.
Point is, I think there's a good chance its just the vga box behaving that way, and not necessarily the converter.

Which VGA box? The SABRENT or AudioAuthority? If I find a place that offers a return policy for the AudioAuthority ill bite.
