Metroids 25th Anniversary
Re: Metroids 25th Anniversary
I tend to play through both Metroid and Super Metroid every year or two. I don't really bother with the other games, to be honest. I do like Metroid II, Fusion and Zero and own the Prime games... but why bother when I'd rather play the NES and SNES games?

Check it out! There's a promo video for it via the link as well. It's not just one genre but a whole bunch, and the guys that do Metroid Metal contributed a track. I think it's available for download but if enough people email them they will send out hardcopies with a nifty poster for only 12 bucks.
This has been an enjoyable tribute album. I've been listening to it throughout the day. I really like Zircon's dubstep version of "Ashes to Ashes".
The acoustic "Kraid's Campfire Ballad" with Sebastian Mårtensson feat. Kristin Björkebäck is also quite good.

Glad you like it! Unfortunately I can't seem to be able to download the zip...not sure why.
EDIT: Nevermind, downloading now.

A series with such a strong library of games should have gotten some kind of nod. Maybe it's the Gunpei Yokoi connection and Nintendo's irrational habit of distancing itself from everything that man touched.
Dude you keep bringing this up a lot lately, mind sharing where you're getting this info? Definitely curious.
Definitely a legend in my eyes. The Virtual Boy was a flop, but... Metroid, and then the Game Boy, who knows if Nintendo would even still be around if it weren't for the Game Boy.

He's probably referring to how the virtual boy and the mario land games seem to be mostly forgotten by Nintendo. The Mario Land games weren't even mentioned in the 25th anniversary celebrations.
On the other hand, Game & Watch and the Game Boy itself get lots of love from nintendo, his ultra-hand appears as a smash bros trophy and has it's own wiiware game, and despite not getting any 25th celebration, nintendo obviously considers metroid as one of its key franchises. I don't think I buy the whole 'Nintendo hates Yokoi' argument.

Yeah, I read over his wiki (yea yea) last night and wasn't getting that vibe at all. Just sounded like the guy stepped down after awhile and left on a fairly good note even if the Virtual Boy failed.

If by stepped down you mean he died in a tragic car wreck.
The guy was pretty much forced to take sole blame for the Virtual Boy failing and he became a pariah in Nintendo after that, despite his work being on the same level as Miyamoto. His group, Nintendo RD-1, made some of the greatest Nintendo franchises of all time.
But for some reason Nintendo still omits his contributions, especially when it's something he contributed to Mario.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

Re: Metroids 25th Anniversary
When someone at Nintendo DOES talk about Gunpei Yokoi, it's with praise, fond memories, and reverence. Miyamoto talked about him in a relatively recent interview about the development of the original Mario Bros.
Also, he started working for Bandai quite awhile before he died. When a company had two legendary geniuses working for it, but one left the company years ago and is dead while the other continues to contribute, you're going to hear a lot more about the one that's still alive and working for the company. That's just common sense, not a conscious attempt to somehow dishonor Yokoi.

Re: Metroids 25th Anniversary
i have super metroid and was playing a while back. Never did beat the game nor the 3d gamecube version, i think its mainly due to back tracking and i can easily get lost or confused. I tend not to use guides for games because i like to explore, but i guess for this game i might have to switch my mindset about using a guide.

I don't think any one said that there is a conscious attempt to dishonor Yokoi.
