agree, its one of the poorest, but not that poor. They have 4th largest army in the world and enough money to buy uranium and what not for nukes.

GDP is also easy to manipulate. Financially speaking, NK has close to ties with China, and oh boy, they're not looking in couch cushions for change.

No doubt China have been a huge power of influence in Indochina and North Korea, Japan and South Korea are more influence by the west mainly of trade and treaties.
China have given billions dollars of loans and written off loans to various countries such as Cambodia and North Korea. These funds/ loans have no strings attached, unlike those of that from the Western Countries or the UN.

One of the latest fully Chinese fund to Cambodia and Vietnam is paying US$686 million rail way system. Eventually this railway system will connect most of Indochina and China.

I remember watching a documentary on North korea and one of the tractors was sporting a small European Union logo. God knows how that ended up there. Probably just another "gift" from outsiders in awe of Kim Jong-Il*

Seriously though, how long is it going to have to take before they swallow their pride, admit they're crap, give up and join the South? :?

*this is what North Korean people are reportedly told about all the outside aid.
They're also supposedly told that Kim Jong-Il is immortal and was born under a double rainbow on a mountain
