I believe you can also use a Genesis/Mega Drive flash cart to play MS games on a Genesis.

I think what happens is, if one pin on the Genesis is grounded then the system is put into Master System mode. So adapters aren't really complicated affairs, and a Genesis flash cart can also play MS games. The only reason the Power Base Converter is so huge is because it has the card slot and a pause button.

Also, they bothered to make it look nice. It could have been smaller, but then it would have been an ugly turd sticking out of the cartridge slot. Like a 32X.

Whats the difference between master system 1 and ii controllers? I think I have the 1st generation ones, and I haven't had any problems.

This. I ended up getting rid of my PBC after I had my Genesis modified for S-Video because I wouldn't have been able to use it without cannibalizing it. So, I got the Tototek converter, and while it works fine and has the added plus of allowing Mark III games, it doesn't look that great on the console compared to the PBC.

Turns out all you have to do to make a genesis controller work for all sms games on the pbc is open up your controller and take a pair of scissors to the wire attached to pin 7. All it basically does is disable the A and start button. so you might not want to do this if you don't have some extra controllers laying around. But it is a cheap and effective solution.

I have like 2 or 3 extra Genesis controllers, I might try that sometime.

That's cool. If it's just one wire, if you could find a small enough button switch, you could have a button on the controller to put it in Genesis or Master System mode.

Btw I only tried that with a 3 button controller. I just really wanted to share that because I have not seen anything about it on the web and hope it'll help. Especially seeing as an sms controller alone can run you 10 dollars at the very least on ebay.

I think so. In PAL regions for the most part. I'm not exactly sure why, there wasn't much apparent reason at first. SMS2 didn't release until later.

There's a few variants:
d-pad with center hole for mini joystick attachment
center hole covered by a plastic piece
no center hole at all

And certain master system controllers have the cord go out the right side, close to button 2. Rather annoying.
Lum fan.
