Ghosts/Aliens TV pilot
Re: Ghosts/Aliens TV pilot
Not that great and they insulted The Sword by using their music.

Re: Ghosts/Aliens TV pilot
Well, there is a first time for everything, and this is the first thing that our friend Nathan is in that I didn't enjoy.
The performances aren't bad, rather good actually, but the content and jokes weren't well written. This is nothing against Nathan, as hey, if you see an opportunity for increased visibility I say go for it; I know I do. But...
It's not that pot jokes bother me, it's that people smoking pot in shows/movies/etc. is supposed to be funny that bothers me. Someone smoking pot (all too common) isn't funny, and I'm not sure why so many shows/movies/etc. keep recycling the bit like it is. I mean, a kid trying to pass off a bong as a musical instrument to his parents isn't that funny either, but at least there is an attempt at a joke. Having people smoke pot just for the sake of it is just dumb.
That said, if done properly, showing someone use any drug can be done effectively to set a tone. There's one shot in THE BIG LEBOWSKI where Jeff Bridges in relaxing in his tub, smoking a joint and having a white Russian. He's relaxed, at peace, and the tone of the scene shows it well...then bam! Hell breaks loose.
Another good example is in POLTERGEIST where Coach and his wife break out a box of reefer. Immediately it grabs your attention as they just don't seem to be the pot smoking type, and before this scene we see the parents gently tuck their children in for sleep. It shows us these people aren't exactly who they seem, and with great effect. But it has gotten very tiring to see characters smoking marijuana for the sake of it. I'm just not sure why people find it funny and what it is supposed to say about the characters; am I supposed to think they're cool? Am I supposed to think they are rebels? Druggies? Addicts? Losers? Winners? ... I'm not sure. I just see it as a waste of film if has nothing to do with the movie. It would also be nice to one day see a movie where the "nerdy" lead character says no to drugs in a nonchalant/ non-PSA way. Just a "nah man, I'm cool" would be refreshing instead of the stereotypical nerd getting baked and receiving immediate approval from jocks and hot chicks.
Whew. Sorry about that rant.
Wait. No I'm not.
Nathan, you did a great job in G/A, but it didn't feel like your style of humor. Again, we all need to pay the bills and work on our resumes, but I hope you continue (and I know you are) on focusing on your own brand (it's much funnier).

For a comedian, I'm surprised you messed up the joke this bad. It's not that smoking pot is funny, it's that when they were getting pumped to do things, they'd then show their lazy/reefer side and smoke pot. It's akin to seeing a cop fling into action, only to make a quick pitstop at Dunkin Donuts.Luke wrote:It's not that pot jokes bother me, it's that people smoking pot in shows/movies/etc. is supposed to be funny that bothers me. What is this, 1989? Are the outdated negative connotations concerning pot still around? I thought study after study and (limited) legalization after (limited) legalization put an end to pot's stigma.Am I supposed to think they are rebels? Druggies? Addicts? Losers? Winners? ... I messed up the joke? What?o.pwuaioc wrote: For a comedian, I'm surprised you messed up the joke this bad. Cops at a Donut shop is also not funny unless there is some premise to the joke. It's dumb reference humor like EPIC MOVIE jokes; "Remember this? Then laugh". There is no actual joke.
What stigma? That's the issue I was addressing. What am I supposed to think when I see a character smoke pot other than the fact they smoke it? And if there's nothing it brings to a character, why bother showing it just for the fact to show it?o.pwuaioc wrote: What is this, 1989? Sometimes it adds to character development, but not here.

Re: Ghosts/Aliens TV pilot
I'm all for people doing what they want as long as they're not affecting me, but most people I know or have known that smoke pot really are duller people when high. The ones that smoke a lot are dull all the time. That being said, pot smokers are a lot less likely to cause injury to others than heavy drinkers, and of course that is legal. I do wish it was decriminalized so police could be busy with more important matters and so we could grow it in large quantities to make paper out of it.o.pwuaioc wrote: What is this, 1989? Not sure about the "a lot less likely to cause injury to others than heavy drinkers" statement, but I believe that's part due to the fact that pot is illegal. I think a stoned driver is just as dangerous as a drunk one, but I don't know of any study to 100% back that up. But, I think it would be fair to say stoners reaction times aren't up to par with "sober-folk".

Hate to jack the thread, but in reality Cannabis is pretty non-impairing. Unlike ethanol, THC users are able to accurately gauge the degree of their impairment and compensate. It's definitely not the best thing to do, but it's well within the realm of risks we accept already. I know I'm a much greater danger if I drive without my morning coffee than if I drive after my evening bowl.
Think of it this way. If THC caused severe impairment in reaction times you'd expect video game performance to be dramatically affected. And we know that's not the case.
If you're interested, here's a review of studies from the DOT comparing THC and alcohol on driving ability. In short, most parameters were unchanged by THC. Median lateral deviation was increased by THC at the highest dose, but not by as much as a .08 BAC
