A lot of clone cards fit more loosely, so it's easier to get a poor connection from them. That might account for some of it. Performance brand cards have always worked great for me, and those fit pretty tightly.

The problems seem to come from the 'compressed' memory cards, eg the ones with 4x as many blocks. These are the ones most likely to have corrupted saves. I have a bunch of official memory cards and they all still work to this day. I also have a bunch of 1MB third party memory cards and they are also fine. I never touched the 'big' third party memory cards because of the whole 'corrupted saves' issue that quite a few people had issues with during the PS1s lifespan.
