Re: Quake turns 15 today.
I miss good FPS games like Quake, back when they were just simple fun. No two-weapon limits, no trudging around at realistic speeds, no waiting around behind cover for a break in enemy fire, and no boring-as-dirt level design for the sake of "realism." Lame attempts at realism have ruined the genre for me, so here's to the best! Happy anniversary, Quake!

I kept my original disc (bought at release) until last year. I tried to install, but too many moves and a shitty sleeve case had taken their toll. I guess it's time to hit up the Goodwill electronics store.

Has it been removed? I don't know about the Steam version, but whenever I play Quake using WinQuake or DarkPlaces, the soundtrack doesn't play unless I have the CD in. IIRC, Star Wars Dark Forces 2 has the same problem.J T wrote:I bought this game for the Trent Reznor soundtrack. At the time, I just assumed my computer at the time wouldn't be able to handle it, so I didn't even attempt to play the game. Silly me. I found out years later that my old computer actually did have enough horsepower. Oh well, it was enough for me just to be able to play the CD in my CD player.
I bought it again more recently as part of the iD Super Pack on Steam. I was annoyed to find out that the soundtrack had been removed. However, I also found out that there are ways to put it back in:

Off topic, but Nine Inch Nails is my favorite band, to bad I won't get to see them live anymore. Yes great soundtrack. Great game too!J T wrote:I bought this game for the Trent Reznor soundtrack.

I'll give Quake one thing for sure: The atmosphere and levels visually were INCREDIBLE!
But... it just wasn't as fun as Doom to me (lol, I just said this about Heretic in another thread...), and I feel like Unreal kind of did the neo-gothic atmosphere thing a bit better. That said, Quake 2 I had a lot fun with (even if I like the setting in 1 more), and I even liked Quake 4 a good bit. Rumors are id plans on bringing back Quake 5 to the neo-gothic style of the first game, which I definitely hope happens! Epic certainly probably doesn't care about Unreal anymore anyways, on a campaign standpoint. Hell, took me years to even realize the first Unreal game had a huge campaign... and it turned out to be one of the best FPS's I've ever played.
