I hate to tell you what I used to pay for an extra 8MB of RAM back in the day.

Others will tell you stories of how a few KB of RAM used to cost hundreds...

I remember finding some old catalogues from the 80's where they were advertising systems with an amazing 64kb of ram for only$6990. I sent away for one but they had since become a flower shop. :(

The only way to deactivate the ray beam and fight back the vampire alien threat is with a complicated series of foot patterns on the device's control board that looks remarkably like a DDR pad. We will all praise this man for saving our lives and buy him a mountain of stuffed animals.

The issue that I have with the OP is calling the price difference "price gouging". I don't see any evidence of that. Price gouging would be selling the DDR2 RAM for $500 or more.

It's not price gouging; demand for DDR2 is dropping off so manufacturers have shifted their equipment/focus to DDR3. That's why DDR3 is very cheap in comparison, the DDR2 you are looking for is in shorter supply and less plants are making it (which means smaller volume and parts/equipment will drive up the cost). Hell, $65 for 4GB DDR2 is still cheaper than what I paid when I got mine :)

Funny story actually. When I first built my gaming PC, I held no bars back and loaded it with 6GB ram (3x2GB). 2 months in, one stick died, so I sent it to Kingston to get it repaired with a turn around ETA of 2 weeks. To deal with it in the mean time, I bought another 6GB set from Frys with the intent of returning it within the window. Come a month later, Kingston finally returns my sticks, and I can't return the Fry's RAM, so now I'm stuck with 12GB of ram. 6GB was pushing it, I see no reason to have more than that.

On the lighter side, with 12GB ram, I can encode Bluray quality video at a rate faster than 1x ;)
If you aren't having a good time, why are you playing?

More like why not? You can get 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 1600 RAM for $80-$100... stuff is dirt cheap :) When I built a PC three years ago 4GB cost me $95.
