Can someone confirm that the PS3 is indeed Region Free?

It's funny that this question came up because I was looking at the PS3 Orange Box game on Ebay and was wondering why some were cheaper than others. Apparently the PAL version is cheaper and I bought it after reading some old threads in this forum that confirms it will work.

Speaking of PAL vs NTSC, in this age of HD programming, do PAL HD TVs still use 50Hz instead of 60Hz? Thinking about it some more, I think this is actually due to the electricity standard which is 50Hz so yes, European TVs still use 50Hz.

PAL vs NTSC isn't an issue with HDTVs. It's why you can import european region-free blu rays no problem.

If there are any region locked PS3 games, I doubt any of them are "important" (region-exclusive). I've imported tons of region-exclusive games (both PAL and NTSC-J) and have never had a problem.

So it ended up being $28 total for new/sealed. There's someone over at assemblergames.com selling a bunch of NTSC for $50 new/sealed which is what prompted me to look for one. It seems that the used NTSC version goes for $25-$45 depending on condition. Looking at old threads, gamestop used to have it for $19 but the current price is $29.

Just to add to this, some PAL games won't be displayed properly on NTSC TVs if you're using component or composite cables. You have to use HDMI.

The PS3 is NOT region free. The publishers can still choose to region lock their titles, the vast majority don't though.

PS1 and PS2 (if you have a compatible PS3) will only work on the same region system. IE PAL on PAL, NTSC on NTSC.

Every PS3 game I have ever heard of is region-free. Unfortunately, a lot of DLC is not region-free.

Doesn't matter. The system is still region locked.

Regarding the bluray issue. Again, the system is locked for bluray regions as well. However the vast majority of blurays aren't locked so they will work on any system. I think Fox lock their blurays. There's a few others. There's a website that tells you whether or not blurays are region locked. My stepdad used that to find out which blurays to import before he died. I'm not that bothered about bluray so I've since forgotten what it was.
