PS1 SCPH-7000 series
The latest grey model that still has the beautiful parallel port for utility carts. The 7000 series also fixed FMV problems of the earlier models and has a nice Soundscope CD music player.

PS2 Fat V10
Fat Fat Fat, Get the Fat. For HDAdvance/HDLoader hard drive capability. This is the main reason of playing PS2 games on a PS2 over PS2 games on the PS3. V9 and V10 takes a different flip top compared to the older models.

I clicked on this thread expecting there to be some discussion about the PSX, but it turns out you meant the original Playstation. PSX is actually the name of a special model of the Playstation 2 that is also a DVR.

Hypothetical. Some refer to the original grey as the PSX.

PS1-PSX-PSOne your pick.

Yeah, THAT particular version of the slim does indeed make some PS2 games incompatible. Go figure, right?
Wombatula wrote:And the reason I was interested in something like OPL isn't to pirate a bunch of games. I'm a collector and I'd like to be able to use OPL or whatever to boot games from a hd and protect the game discs, plus I've heard it helps with loading times a great deal. Although I will admit if I can boot copies of very expensive games to try before I buy, then I will do so.
I wasn't trying to insinuate anything about pirating games. I've definitely used OPL to play a few games I don't own (Haunted Castle - good thing I didn't buy that shitty game!). But I definitely have way more games loaded onto my hard drive that I actually own. Protect the discs, save wear and tear from the PS2 drive, and get faster loading times? It's definitely worth doing.

I always heard the first model PSX didn't even need a chip to play imports. Something about going to the music screen and tricking the console into thinking the same disc was still in after you left the music screen. Urban myth?...

Not that it really matters. I can still do the swap trick standing upside down blindfolded. It's like riding a bike. Once you know how to do it you never forget it...

Oh I know you weren't. I was just clarifying because I know it's a touchy subject for some people and was just trying to prevent an argument over piracy before one ensued.

Just because some people call it PSX, doesn't make them right. Of course just calling it "Playstation" can be confusing since that name is shared by every gaming system Sony makes. That's why calling it PS1 makes the most sense. When there are sequels to a game, people will add the 1 to the original's name to remove confusion. You don't call things by their codenames, especially if that exact name was used in a similar product that actually came out.

It would be like if Nintendo's next console was released as "Dolphin", and then people started referring to the Gamecube as "Dolphin". How confusing would that be?

tl;dr
Call things by their actual names. Add a 1 to the name if needed, to reduce confusion over something with similarly named sequels. You can also add "the first" or "original". If someone says PSX, I will assume they are talking about the PSX.

I can guarantee you that referring to some obscure run of the PS2 by the PSX instead of the PS1 would cause more confusion than the other way around.

Back when the PS1 first came out, it was extremely common to see people refer to it as the PSX on forums, and now the association's stuck. I see no problem with referring to things by generally well-known nicknames. Plus, PSX looks cooler.

Also, the Dolphin example is an illogical one. PSX and PS1 are very similar, both visually and in nature. Instantly recognizable. "Nintendo GameCube" and "Dolphin" are completely different in both regards. The reason people commonly use PSX to refer to the PS1 isn't specifically because it was the codename used.

I'm sorry, but thats just pedantic bullshit really.

PSX has been an abbreviation for the original Playstation console before the PSX DVR came along, and even before PsOne even existed.

It's pretty widely used by sites like psx-scene, IGN (psx.ign.com), underground-gamer, snesorama, etc.

Besides, the PSX never even came OUT in the US or EU, and has a limited prevalence JP; so to assume someone is talking about the PSX DVR everytime you see PSX is just kinda...silly. Context man, context.
